  • Episode 95 | "Limelight: Rush In The 80s" with Author Martin Popoff
It’s part two of my discussion with author Martin Popoff. Last time (Episode 94) we talked about Thin Lizzy and Martin's new book out called "Thin Lizzy: A Visual Biography". This episode we discuss his other new book "Limelight: Rush in the 80s". It’s the second in a career spanning Rush Across The Decades trilogy.

In the follow-up to "Anthem: Rush in the ’70s", Martin brings together canon analysis, cultural context, and extensive firsthand interviews to celebrate Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart at the peak of their persuasive power. Rush was one of the most celebrated hard rock acts of the ’80s, and the second book of Popoff’s staggeringly comprehensive three-part series takes readers from "Permanent Waves" to "Presto", while bringing new insight to "Moving Pictures", their crowning glory. "Limelight: Rush in the ’80s" is a celebration of fame, of the pushback against that fame, of fortunes made ― and spent.

Find out which Rush albums from the 80s Martin loves and which ones he hates. I also asked him what he thinks of a scathing review one Rush album received from Rolling Stone and what grade he'd give Rush's complete catalogue from that decade.

  • Episode 94 | "Thin Lizzy: A Visual Biography" with Author Martin Popoff
Author Martin Popoff returns to the DISCovery podcast to talk about two new books out now. Thin Lizzy: A Visual Biography" and "Limelight: Rush In The 80s". This is a two-parter. This episoe we talk Thin Lizzy. If any band deserves to have homage paid to them with a massive photo book its Thin Lizzy. No one has published a visual biography of the band…until now.

Drawing on several thousand images and items of memorabilia the 240-page book is full of live and off stage photos that span over decades. Tons of super cool memorabilia including backstage passes, concert posters, media advertisements and more. Martin tops it off with a 20,000 word bio on the band.

Martin’s here to talk to us all about the book and the great Thin Lizzy!

  • Episode 93 | Bon Jovi 'New Jersey'
On October 15th, 1988 Bon Jovi started a four-week run at number one on the US Album chart with their fourth studio album 'New Jersey'. Bon Jovi was coming off of the multi-million selling 1986 album 'Slippery When Wet' so expectations were high when 'New Jersey' was released on September 19th, 1988. The band lived up to those expectations with another chart topper, another multi-million seller (seven million sold) and an album that still holds the record for having the most top ten hits for any hard rock album with five.

But 'New Jersey' is more than just the hits. The album tracks are among the best of the band's career thanks to Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora who were at the peak of their musical powers by this time.

Hear the stories behind all of the songs along with some of the original demos (including an acoustic version of "Born To Be My Baby"). Also find out what the other possible album titles the band had in mind, the story behind the album cover art and how the album and grueling tour that followed nearly ended a burned out Bon Jovi at the end of the 80s.

    TRACKLISTING:
    1. "Lay Your Hands on Me"
    2. "Bad Medicine"
    3. "Born To Be My Baby"
    4. "Living In Sin"
    5. "Blood On Blood"
    6. "Homebound Train"
    7. "Wild Is The Wind"
    8. "Ride Cowboy Ride"
    9. "Stick To Your Guns"
    10. "I'll Be There For You"
    11. "99 In The Shade"

  • Episode 89 | Creedence Clearwater Revival 'Green River' Album
On September 19th, 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival started a four-week run at number one on the US album chart with 'Green River.' It was one of three albums the band released in just that year alone. The number seven album 'Bayou Country' before it with the number three album 'Willie and the Poorboys' coming after. By the end of 1969, Creedence had three top-10 albums on the Billboard 200, and four top-five singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

CCR was everywhere by the summer of 1969 and the bulk of the credit has to go to the band's main songwriter John Fogerty. There’s no arguing that John was a songwriting machine at that point and you'll hear why he was intentionally writing as much as he could with the goal of writing as many hits as he could in this episode.

There is also, of course, the well documented battles John had with his bandmates including his brother Tom Fogerty and it all came down to the songs; more specifically who gets credit for the songs and who gets paid for them. We’ll explore that topic as well but, above all, this episode will celebrate the songs singer/guitarist John Fogerty, guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford recorded on 'Green River' while giving you the stories behind each.

    SIDE ONE:
    1. "Green River"
    2. "Commotion"
    3. "Tombstone Shadow"
    4. "Wrote A Song For Everyone"

    SIDE TWO:
    1. "Bad Moon Rising"
    2. "Lodi"
    3. "Cross-Tie Walker"
    4. "Sinister Purpose"
    5. "The Night Time Is The Right Time"
