Whatabout Leviticus 25:44-55 and the slavery of aliens and temporary residents?
Yes, Israelites were allowed to purchase slaves, the aliens and temporary residents living among them in Isael, and those who were born in the land from resident parents. An Israelite was not allowed do this to another Israelite. Rather – they became indentured servants. The same protection laws of Exodus 21 would apply to the resident alien purchased as a slave. The same rules would apply to them as the indentured servants. They were not allowed to be taken advantage of. Exodus 21 states anyone who kills a person should be put to death. Same thing with the abuse of slaves – if injured they were to be set free. What often gets overlooked is the aliens and temporary residents were allowed to "prosper." The resident aliens could also hire Israelites as indentured servants. This highlights the relationship between the resident aliens and the Israelites. It was not simply one group oppressing the other. This was not the case within the American context of slavery. Boaz acquired Ruth and married her (Ruth 4). He did not see Ruth as mere property. Caleb married his Egyptian slave (ebed) in 1 Chronicles 2:34-35. She would inherit all the rights and so would her offspring. Foreigners were allowed to settle in Israel and embrace their culture. The foreigner was free to choose to live in Israel or outside of Israel (Ruth and Naomi). They become resident aliens. This gave them better living standards. Poverty was the main reason many chose to come to Israel. There are many factors at work here: God constantly reminds Israel that they were once slaves and aliens in the land of Egypt (Deut 5:15, 10:19, 15:15). This memory was to be used in how they treated the resident aliens within Israel. God commanded that Israel care for them (Lev 23:22). God commanded Israel love them (Deut 10:19). God commanded Israel to provide food for them (Deut 24:19).God commanded they promptly pay for their labor (Deut 24:14-15). God’s desire was for the resident alien to be joined to the Lord Himself (Isa 56:3).
