The 1973 Kentucky Derby featured not only the most famous thoroughbred racing horse of all time in Secretariat, but a worthy field that featured the likes of Sham and Angle Light - both of whom beat the superhorse just two weeks before in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York.
The horse racing world watched to see if Secretariat, the 1972 Horse of the Year, could live up to the lofty expectations bestowed upon him. Secretariat was ridden by jockey Ron Turcotte, trained by Lucien Lauren and owned by a syndicate headlined by Penny Chenery of Meadow Farm, this same trio also brought along Riva Ridge who had won the Derby and Belmont Stakes the year prior. In this episode we went back and watched the original CBS broadcast and discussed:If you want to watch the CBS broadcast as it aired in 1973, check out the videos on our website here: https://distantreplaypodcast.com/ep-74-the-1973-kentucky-derby/

Most sports fans are at least aware of the 'The Rumble in the Jungle.' The epic heavyweight fight between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali took place in Kinshasa, Zaire on October 30, 1974 and is widely considered to be one of the most iconic sporting the events the world has ever seen.
The young Foreman was a 4-1 favorite over the cagey veteran Ali, and the fight that would ensue would be one of the more legendary bouts in boxing history. Another key aspect of the fight was that this was a great time in boxing history with Ali, Foreman and Joe Frazier all fighting each other in epic bouts. You might remember some of those like the 'Fight of the Century' Ali/Frazier 1 and of course the 'Thrilla in Manila' which would happen after this fight, and the 3rd installment of the Ali/Frazier trilogy. What also made this fight unique was the against-the-grain strategy Ali used to tactically beat Foreman. That strategy would become known as the rope-a-dope. Couple that with an amazing environment in 20th of May Stadium and you had one for the ages. In this episode we discuss:We'll talk all of that and much more as we relive a classic. This one is well worth your time if you've never seen it.

We're past the midway point of the Last Chance U series on Netflix featuring East LA College and episode 5 might be the best one yet.
What's so great about this episode isn't what happens on the court but what happens away from the gym at Colby Ranch. And it seems, at least in the immediate days following that field trip, that this was exactly what the team needed.
Join us as we recap the fifth episode in the series and share some of our favorite scenes and highlights.
