Ditching the ‘But Trap’: Embracing Your Worth and Identity as God Sees You

Listen Later

I’m so excited to share today’s episode with you, where we dive into a topic that hits home for many of us: self-worth, identity, and the little ways we sometimes let others or ourselves downplay our own value. If you’ve ever found yourself in that cringe-worthy moment of receiving a compliment and instinctively following it up with a “but, this episode is for you!

In our chat, as you're personal trainer for thought patterns, I unpack what I like to call the 'but trap'—that sneaky habit we have of downplaying compliments. You know the drill: someone tells you they love your hair, and instead of soaking in that beautiful affirmation, you respond with, “Thanks, but I haven’t washed it in days!” It’s time we break free from that cycle!

I even share my the infamous skinny jeans saga that led to getting some real wisdom about tag sizes, labels, and not 'living from qualifiers' from my mom. She told me, “No one is looking at your tag size.” Isn’t that a breath of fresh air? Our worth is not defined by those pesky labels society throws at us. We’re beautifully and fearfully made, just as we are!

Working on ditching the qualifiers and embracing our worth can start to rewire our brains for greater self-confidence and self-worth. This can create lasting changes in how we see and feel about ourselves. It’s true! When we practice self-acceptance, we’re not just boosting our mood; we’re actually promoting neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to change and adapt. This means that every time you affirm your worth, you’re strengthening those positive pathways in your brain, making it easier to accept yourself and feel confident. How cool is that?

In this episode, I show you how to take compliments without that pesky qualifier. Just say “thank you” and let the warmth of that affirmation fill your heart! It’s such a small step, but it can shift your mindset in a big way. Remember, self-acceptance is key to mental well-being, and we all need a little more of that in our lives—no ‘buts’ about it!

By the end of the episode, you’ll have four new actions to help affirm your worthiness and to begin wiring your brain to embody that worth. These little actions can create a ripple effect of positivity in our lives and the lives of those around us. Let’s be the change we want to see!

So grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let’s chat about how to break free from the 'but trap' and step boldly into our self-worth. You’re worthy, you’re loved, and you’re exactly who God created you to be!

And I can’t wait to hear your thoughts! How do you tackle the 'but trap' in your life? Our goal is to continue to grow more at home in our minds so we can be more at home in the kingdom to shine and share for Christ!
