Diva Hall of Fame

Cher is a woman who requires no introduction. For 60 years, the DIVA has been a multi-talented singer, actress, and businesswoman that has accumulated an accolade of awards from Grammy's, Oscar's, Emmy, Golden Globe's, and was recently honored by the Kennedy Center. Her contribution to pop culture cannot be understated.

Recently, she gave a sit-down interview to the Washington Post that is worth the read.

The woman is an active Twitter user with her own unique style of tweeting her political points of views and disgust with the current administration.

For us gay men, we love her precisely because of who she is and what she represents. Cher is the epitome of a true DIVA and is the gift that keeps on giving.

With her recent turn in the movie musical "Mama Mia! Here We Go Again," she honored us with her rendition of the classic ABBA tunes "Fernando" and "Super Trouper." Inspired to cover more classic ABBA tracks, she went on to release a full album of classics by the Swedish pop group adored by many (including this writer) from around the world. The album was critically acclaimed with its debut landing at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and well as #1 in Top Album Sales Chart (a best for her lengthy career).

Enter Barry Harris and his devotion to the queen. He has magically re-imagined many of these tracks from her new release "Dancing Queen" and Party Favorz has mixed them in with some of Cher's most iconic songs during her decades of music recording, culminating into one giant Cher wet dream for the true believers.

Shannon Brenda Greene[1][2] (born May 2, 1958), known by the mononym Shannon, is an American singer and songwriter of freestyle and dance-pop music. She is best known for her single "Let the Music Play" "Give Me Tonight" which topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in 1983-84.

In 1985, Shannon released her second album "Don't You Wanna Get Away," with the same-titled single reaching #1 on Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

By the time her third album was released in 1986, it appeared her steam was running out. The album "Love Goes All the Way" failed to chart any singles on the dance charts and at radio. What is odd is that Shannon helped pioneer the freestyle genre and it was going stronger than ever at the time. Expose and Lisa Lisa with Cult Jam were very successful at radio and in the clubs. In fact, freestyle dominated the club charts and radio well into the mid-90's.

Despite looking like an 80's icon that was later the image of Whitney Houston and a great singing voice, it almost appeared that Atlantic records lost interest in promoting her as an artist or didn't know how to market her. By 1987, Shannon asked to be released from her recording contract.

In the 90's, Shannon had a resurgence with remixes of her two biggest hits by Hex Hector, Thunderpuss, and Chris Cox amongst others. She went on to further success recording for Todd Terry, Tony Moran, and Sash!.

It's a shame Shannon had not gained the level of stardom that her peers had, especially since she embodied the full 80's package. Nevertheless, her earliest hits are part of GenX musical catalog that is beloved by millions.

The first half of this tribute covers her 80's output and then transitions into her 90's work, which consists of House Music, Trance, and Circuit.

Party Favorz is wrapping up our Back to the 80's edition with the final induction into the Diva Hall of Fame with the gender-bending and ultra-influential Dead or Alive.

Dead or Alive was an English pop band formed in 1980 in Liverpool; finding success in the mid-1980s, releasing seven singles that made the Top 40 UK and three albums on the Top 30 UK. They were the first band under the production team of Stock Aitken Waterman to have a number-one single. At the peak of their success, their lineup consisted of Pete Burns (vocals), Mike Percy (bass), Steve Coy (drums) and Tim Lever (keyboards); they have released seven studio albums and five compilation albums.

Two of the band's singles reached the U.S. Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" (No. 11 in 1985) and "Brand New Lover" (No. 15 in 1986).

"You Spin Me Round" peaked at number one for two weeks in 1985 in the UK, then charted again in 2003 and 2006 following Burns's appearance on the television reality show Celebrity Big Brother.[vague] It also became the first of two singles to top the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked them as the 96th most successful "dance artist" of all-time. As of 2017 Dead or Alive has sold over 30 million albums and 28 million singles worldwide.[5] The band was discontinued following Pete Burns' death in 2016. ³

As a GenX child of the 80's, I can honestly say that Dead or Alive was the shit! Beyond the two singles mentioned above, songs like "Lover Come Back To Me," "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me a Doctor)," "Something In My House," and "Come Home With Me Baby" were floor-filling staples at the time of their release.

Fueled by the production team of Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), Dead or Alive generated some of the most beloved Hi-NRG dance tracks of the era.

Sadly, lead singer Pete Burns died of cardiac arrest in 2016 at the age of 57.

As part of the era of big-hair and excess, the influence Dead or Alive had on dance music, as well as gender-fluidity, cannot be understated. It is with great love and admiration that Party Favorz inducts Dead or Alive into the Diva Hall of Fame as well as our Legacy artists edition.

After having finished the Exposé diva series, I decided to round out a couple of previous requests for 80's iconic artists. The next entry into the Diva Hall of Fame is none other than Bananarama.

Bananarama is an English female pop music vocal group formed in London in 1981 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward. Their success on both pop and dance charts has earned them a listing in the Guinness World Records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world.[1]

The group was phenomenally successful in the UK and throughout Europe with a fair deal of success in the US. Hit's like "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)," "Cruel Summer," "I Heard A Rumor," and the worldwide #1 "Venus" are staples in their massive catalog.

Their overall success heavily relied on popular songs from the past, reinterpreted for a newer audience. It was this successful formula for much of the 1980's that fueled their stardom.

Originally, I was going to focus this set on just their eighties output but to make it work, I went ahead and pulled from their 1990 album "Pop Life" which featured Jacquie O'Sullivan who replaced Fahey after she left and formed the group Shakespeares Sister. Overall, this is a fun set that relies heavily on the production work of Stock, Aitken, Waterman (SAW) who are one of the most successful production teams in pop music history. In fact, they are instrumental in the success of our next entrant into the Diva Hall of Fame tomorrow.

With the original group intact, Bananarama recently finished a very successful tour in the UK and North America this past August that featured all of their hits.

Party Favorz is excited to officially enter Bananarama into the Diva Hall of Fame. Let the celebrations begin!

We're going back to the 80's this week with our latest Diva Hall of Fame entry, Exposé!

Exposé is an American Latin freestyle vocal group. Primarily consisting of lead vocalists Jeanette Jurado, Ann Curless, and Gioia Bruno, the group achieved much of their success between 1984 and 1993, becoming the first group to have four top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart from its debut album, including the 1988 #1 hit "Seasons Change".[1] In March 2015, Billboard magazine named the group the eighth most-successful girl group of all-time.[2]

Back in the day, these ladies struck gold with their debut album "Exposure," which racked up 4 top tens hits ("Come Go With Me," "Let Me Be the One," "Point of No Return") and the one number 1 hit "Seasons Change."

They continued their streak with their follow-up album "What You Don't Know" featuring the self-titled single, "Tell Me Why," and "Stop, Listen, Look & Think." As the 90's rolled around their popularity began to wane, even though freestyle had really taken off.

Exposé continue to tour today. In fact, one of our followers suggested I enter them into the Diva Hall of Fame after recently seeing them in concert.

Aretha Franklin was originally inducted into the Diva Hall of Fame in 2016. Her entire history and back catalog is not inconsequential and for music buffs (fanatics) like myself, I was completely mesmerized by her work once I really started digging into her earlier catalog that was before my time.

By all accounts, my musical education goes way past what's presented here on this site. Yes, I love house music in all its forms but the truth is, I just love music. From Motown, Stax and Soul to Disco, New Wave, Hard Rock, Punk, Country, and Pop, I absorb it all and have a vast appreciation for virtually everything.

Aretha Franklin is one of the biggest standouts of my musical brain. I listen to her when I need a pick me up or even when I'm in a celebratory mood. Her music, her vocals, her style and ability to reinterpret other people's music is second to none. Her music and voice was the soundtrack for a generation of people that were living through the turbulent times of the 60's when equal rights and war took center stage as protests mounted throughout this nation. There is a reason she is the Queen of Soul.

Party Favorz is a site devoted to all things "dance" and the variety of genres that fall under that all-encompassing label. It would be difficult to pigeon-hole Aretha into any of these categories but ever since she began dabbling in sophisticated disco in the early 80's, which later exploded into the massive "Freeway of Love," "Who's Zoomin' Who," and "Another Night," there is no denying her ability to cross genres.

It wasn't until the early 90's when C + C Music (Clivillés and Cole) reworked her single for the "A Deeper Love" from the "Sister Act 2" soundtrack that she successfully transitioned into House Music. That song has been a major staple in DJ arsenals and has been reworked a multitude of times; mainly because of its deep resonance with the Gay community.

What's important to note is that many (but not all) of her earlier hits have inspired today's DJ's to sample those works and present these classic songs to a whole new generation. Many of those are represented here along with her more contemporary releases and official remixes. What I've pulled together is the best of both worlds.

While her original induction into the Diva Hall of Fame is still up on this site, this new set expands on several of those songs with new releases and alternate versions than what first appeared on that induction. Once I heard the news of her illness, I began working on this set a week ago and frankly think I've outdone myself because pulling all these different genres together is no easy task.

With that said, Party Favorz is honoring the one and only Aretha Franklin in a way that I only know how. She is widely considered to be one of the best and most influential singers in American history. With much love and R-E-S-P-E-C-T,  ladies and gentlemen, I give you the fabulous Aretha Franklin. As I promised yesterday, I've got another updated set featuring a past inductee into the Diva Hall of Fame, who compliments yesterday's re-induction of Kelly Clarkson. I am talking about none other than the fabulous Pink!

Their paths were similar in that they were both pigeon-holed by their labels into the current R&B, hip-hop style of the moment with their first albums. While both were successful, their debut albums did not necessarily represent their style. It wasn't until their second albums that they transitioned into a more pop-rock style that they exploded. Both are fantastic vocalists and both can render heart-wrenching songs that swell our broken hearts.

While Kelly always maintained a persona wrapped around the perky, sweet innocent girl with a rock edge, Pink was the more in your face, not politically correct bad girl of pop who really didn't give a fuck what others thought about her.

Of course, much of this was a facade as well all know the bad girl from Pennsylvania had kind of leather and lace persona who wore her heart on her sleeve. Pink went through some transitions on her first three albums before really solidifying her sound. It was all uphill from there.

Known for her amazing acrobatic performances in concert, a testament to her amazing stamina, she is able to not only captivate us with her voice and music but with her artistic performances that continue to defy. No one (not even Madonna) come close.

Pink is currently on tour but has been temporarily sidelined due to a gastric virus. We hope this is not serious and that she'll be back up and running in no time.

In the meantime, Pink 2018 builds on the original set released in 2013 with several updated versions of her earlier work and newer material. It is my greatest pleasure to once again reinduct Pink into the Diva Hall of Fame. ENJOY!

Party Favorz is digging into our past inductees into the Diva Hall of Fame and updating those that have since released considerable new material with a refresh of the original inductions.

Kelly Clarkson is one of two divas getting a makeover. While her original induction from 2013 is still available, she remains just as viable today as she did when it was released.

Considered America's sweetheart, she is a refreshing breath of fresh air from all the noise that's cluttering up our social collective. She also remains a bad-ass and shows her feisty spirit when called out with negativity.

Yes girl, YOU ARE! Kelly is beautiful no matter her size and her winning personality and awesome vocals will keep us in her corner for eternity. Kelly can be seen as a coach on NBC's The Voice though honestly, I don't have cable so I couldn't tell if it's still on or not. She also just finished a pilot for a daytime talk show and is currently shopping it around to the various networks. Once again, it's her personality that will likely get it picked up and I wish nothing but continued success for her.

RuPaul has been recording and building his image since the mid-80's. It wasn't until his debut album Supermodel of the World in 1993 that all his work paid off. The initial single Supermodel (You Better Work) was a global success, which led to becoming a spokesperson for MAC cosmetics, his own talk show The RuPaul Show on VH1, a radio show with Michell Visage, cameos in a variety of movies, two books (Lettin' It All Hang Out and Workin' It! RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style), and a total of 14 studio albums. His influence in pop culture and within the drag scene cannot be underestimated. 

"You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don't care! Just as long as you call me."

RuPaul also hosts and produces the widely popular RuPaul's Drag Race which has been running strong since 2009; first on Logo and now on VH1. The show has earned two Primetime Emmy Awards and was recently renewed for its 11th season.

Just in time for Pride 2019, it's my greatest pleasure to honor the Queen of Drag into the Diva Hall of Fame not only for his camp-style booty-shaking house-music floor stompers but for his tireless work for the LGBT+ community, equality, and empowerment. He or she; (who gives a f!@#) is adored by millions and will go down in history as a pioneering visionary in the fight for equal rights and visibility. We love you Ru. Keep doing what you're doing. Party Favorz is back with a new entry into the Diva Hall of Fame. Erika Jayne (Erika Girardi) was born and raised in Atlanta, GA (my adopted home city) and rose to prominence with the release of her debut single Rollercoaster in 2007, which topped the Billboard Dance Club chart. Subsequent singles like Stars, Give You Everything, and Pretty Mess hit the top spot followed by the release of her underrated debut album Pretty Mess. Produced by the legendary Eric Kupper, the album was heavily influenced by 80's icons like Madonna and Prince while retaining an electro-pop sensibility that was modern at the time of its release. It really is stellar if you've never had the chance to listen to it.

In keeping with our promise to induct virtually every Diva in Billboard's 100 Greatest of All Time Top Dance Club Artists, Ms. Jayne ranks at no. 42 with a total of 9 number one club hits under her belt.

Party Favorz was fortunate enough to interview Erika during her ascendancy, which is still available on the site. I am not a journalist, nor do I pretend to be. So it's a pretty meat and potatoes interview but she was nice enough to send us some really cool t-shirts that were later auctioned off.

Many of you know Erika Jayne as a fan-favorite on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in addition to multiple stints on The Young and the Restless as well as other television shows. She continues to tour and appear at multiple Pride events throughout the country as we gays absolutely adore this woman. Just one look at her video for One Hot Pleasure and you'll know why.

While Erika continues to release singles like the playful XX$PENSIVE (included here) and the recent Cars, she hasn't commissioned remixes like she did with her previous efforts. She has been remixed by some of the biggest names in the industry, so I took the liberty of including at least two different versions of her biggest hits in this set. They are so unique and different, it's often difficult to discern that they are the same song; giving testament to how strong the originals were.
