    Summary:

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on 24th September 1896 in Saint Paul, Minnesota into an upper-middle class family. Whilst his mother was pregnant with him, his two young sisters tragically died. Fitzgerald once said this was when his destiny as a writer was ordained. His intelligence and talent was recognised from an early age, with his first story, about a detective being published in the school magazine when he was just 13. In 1913 he enrolled at Princeton but his devotion to his own literary pursuits resulted in him leaving and, rather bizarrely, joining the Army. In 1918, stationed at Fort Sheridan near Montgomery, Alabama he met and became infatuated and then inseparable from Zelda Sayre. Initially though she refused to marry him but with the success of 'This Side of Paradise', the fame and the flow of money enabled them both to begin a gilded life. For them this was The Jazz Age. For Fitzgerald he was already an alcoholic. He continued to write with great mastery and the titles of his novels and many of his 164 short stories are household names. The Great Gatsby, often cited as The Great American Novel was published to mixed reviews. As America moved from the Great Depression to the slaughter of the Second World War his works and himself were seen as far too entwined with the decadent twenties. The world had moved on and he hadn't. Further tragedy was never far from his life. Zelda after years of erratic and now intolerable behaviour was committed to an institution in 1936. His own sales began to decline and he became a hack for hire in Hollywood, dependent on increasing amounts of booze and the weekly pay check. His drunken state had often resulted in arrest or hospitalisation, further imperiling his talents. Despite his contribution to many MGM films he received only one credit. The end came all too soon for one of America's greatest ever writers. On 21st December 1940, at only 44 years of age in Hollywood, F Scott Fitzgerald succumbed to a heart attack. His classic 'Bernice Bobs Her Hair' carefully pulls apart the relationship between two cousins one hot summer. Something has to give and with Fitzgerald its an absolute certainty that the brittle lives of young women finally snap in unique ways.

    Summary:

Katherine Tynan was born on January 23rd 1859 into a large farming family in Clondalkin, County Dublin, and educated at a convent school in Drogheda. In her early years she suffered from eye ulcers, which left her somewhat myopic. She first began to have her poems published in 1878. A great friend to Gerard Manley Hopkins and to WB Yeats (who it is rumoured proposed marriage but was rejected). With Yeats to encourage her, her poetry blossomed and she was equally supportive of his. She married fellow writer and barrister Henry Albert Hinkson in 1898. They moved to England where she bore and began to raise 5 children although two were to tragically die in infancy. In 1912 they returned to Claremorris, County Mayo when her husband was appointed magistrate there from 1912 until 1919. Sadly her husband died that year but Katherine continued to write. Her output was prolific, some sources have her as the author of almost a 100 novels. Here we concentrate on her poetry. Amongst the classics such as 'The Wind That Shakes the Barley' are numerous war poems. She is now sometimes grouped amongst the War Poets of the First World War. Her experience was not direct but as a Mother with one son serving in France and another in Palestine, the emotions, fears and doubts are expressed in a beautiful heart-felt way. Katharine died on April 2nd 1931 and she is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery in London.1 - The Poetry of Katherine Tynan - An Introduction2 - Any Woman by Katharine Tynan3 - The Nurse by Katharine Tynan4 - The Only Child by Katharine Tynan 5 - Alienation by Katharine Tynan6 - The Young Mother by Katharine Tynan7 - Any Mother by Katharine Tynan8 - The Only Son by Katharine Tynan9 - The Father by Katharine Tynan10 - The Summons by Katharine Tynan11 - Joining the Colours by Katharine Tynan12 - The Aerodrome by Katharine Tynan13 - Flower of Youth by Katharine Tynan14 - A Lament by Katharine Tynan15 - The Predestined by Katharine Tynan16 - A Hero by Katharine Tynan17 - Mid the Piteous Heap of Dead by Katharine Tynan18 - The Weeping Babe by Katharine Tynan19 - All Souls by Katharine Tynan20 - No Man's Land by Katharine Tynan21 - The Old Soldier by Katharine Tynan22 - Salutation by Katharine Tynan23 - Wings in the Night by Katharine Tynan24 - The Great Sorrow by Katharine Tynan25 - The End of the Day by Katharine Tynan26 - They Who Return by Katharine Tynan27 - Quiet Eyes by Kathaine Tynan28 - The Refuge by Katharine Tynan29 - The Foggy Dew by Katharine Tynan30 - A Song of Spring by Katharine Tynan31 - Slow Spring by Katharine Tynan32 - Sheep and Lambs by Katharine Tynan33 - Easter by Katharine Tynan34 - Winter Sunset by Katharine Tynan35 - A Gardener Sage by Katharine Tynan36 - The Bird's Bargain by Katharine Tynan37 - St Francis and the Birds by Katharine Tynan38 - The Wind That Shakes the Barley by Katharine Tynan39 - Blessings by Katharine Tynan40 - A Song for the New Year by Katherine Tynan41 - Mater Dei by Katharine Tynan42 - Immortality by Katharine Tynan43 - The Epitipah by Katharine Tynan

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born on the 2nd February 1882 in Dublin into a middle-class family, and the eldest of ten surviving siblingsAdmired as a brilliant student he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools of Clongowes and Belvedere. From there he went on to attend University College Dublin from 1898, studying English, French and ItalianIn 1902, Joyce was now in his early twenties, and went to Paris to study Medicine but soon abandoned his teachings. Back in Dublin to attend to his dying Mother he met Nora Barnacle. They bonded immediately into a life-long match. Together they decided to emigrate to Europe. The couple lived in Trieste, Rome, Paris, and finally Zürich where Joyce pursued a variety of jobs and ventures to supplement his literary pursuits but none of these paid off. After publishing a poetry volume, 'Chamber Music', in 1907, his short story collection 'The Dubliners', in 1914, helped establish his talent in the rapidly changing world. Although far from home Joyce's literary heart and works were set in his recollections of Dublin. Characters are close resemblances of family and friends and indeed enemies. His landmark work 'Ulysses', published in 1922, is set in the streets and alleyways of the city as it parallels Homer's Odyssey in a variety of styles including its famed stream of consciousness. His pen continued to produce classics of the order of 'A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man' and 'Finnegan's Wake' together with several volumes of poetry and a play 'The Exiles, in 1918. On the 11th January 1941, Joyce underwent surgery in Zürich for a perforated duodenal ulcer. The next day he fell into a coma. Summary:

Edward Everett Hale was born on April 3rd, 1822, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a prodigy, gifted with extraordinary literary skills. At only 13 he graduated from Boston Latin School and enrolled at Harvard College. There, he settled in with the literary set, won two Bowdoin prizes and was elected Class Poet. He graduated in 1839. Hale now moved on to Harvard Divinity School and joined a group who had broken ranks with Calvinistic theology. These idealistic young people believed they were the vanguard for a moral revolution. They believed man was not totally depraved and that he could strive for higher and better things. Their purpose was to show him how. Hale was licensed to preach as a Unitarian minister in 1842. His literary career started quite late. It wasn't until 1859 that he was first published in the Atlantic with his short story "My Double and How He Undid Me." In 1863 the Atlantic published perhaps his best-known work "The Man Without a Country," written to strengthen support for the Union cause during the Civil War. His style of writing fiction as though it were fact helped readers to believe in the sometimes extravagant premise. He wrote across several literary forms including fiction, history and biography. Throughout his career Hale also published through various magazines using each outlet to advance several social reforms, including religious tolerance, the abolition of slavery and wider education. He was the author or editor of more than sixty books; fiction, travel, sermons, biography and history.Edward Everett Hale died in Roxbury, by then part of Boston on June 10th, 1909 at the age of 87. He was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

    Summary:

William Austin was born on 2nd March 1778 in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. After being educated at Harvard College, Austin served as the Unitarian chaplain onboard the USS Constitution from 1799 but resigned a year later after they captured a French ship and his share of salvage proceedings was $200. He now gained the acquaintance of one of the Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton, who helped him begin his legal studies at London's Lincoln's Inn. Whilst there he began his literary career by producing a well-regarded series of 'Letters from London', which described and detailed the politics and personalities of the times. Returning to America, Austin was active in local Boston politics and served in the state senate representing Middlesex during the early 1820s.Although he was a frequent contributor to local periodicals on various subjects from Unitarian theology to chemistry to legal history, nothing quite approached the popularity of 'Peter Rugg: The Missing Man'. This story and its sequels, constructed as long letters, were originally published in the New England Galaxy periodical between 1824 and 1827. So credible was his writing premise that they were accepted as a factual recounting of local legends rather than Austin's fiction.William Austin died on 27th June 1841.

    Language: English

    Release date: 12-29-20

    Publisher: Blackstone Audiobooks

Genres: Science & Technology, Astronomy & Physics

    Summary:

People are used to seeing fake physics in science fictionconcepts like faster-than-light travel, antigravity, and time travel, to name a few. The fiction label ought to be a giveaway, but some SF writersespecially those with a background in professional scienceare so adept at technobabble that it can be difficult to work out what is fake and what is real. To confuse matters further, Isaac Asimovs 1948 piece about the fictitious time-traveling substance thiotimoline was written, not as a short story, but in the form of a spoof research paper.

The boundaries between fact and fiction can also be blurred by physicists themselvessometimes unintentionally, sometimes with tongue-in-cheek, sometimes to satirize perceived weaknesses in research practices. Examples range from hoaxes aimed at exposing poor editorial standards in academic publications, through thought experiments that sound like the plot of a sci-fi movie to April Fools jokes. Even the latter may carry a serious message, whether about the sociology of science or poking fun at legitimate but far-out scientific hypotheses.

This entertaining book is a joyous romp exploring the whole spectrum of fake physicsfrom science to fiction and back again.
