    Summary:

Art and life. Each the mirror of the other. This then is the classic definition of what 'Realism' as a writing form really is. Some might call it a fancy term for the mundane day to day pursuits but in the hands of an author it comes alive. We are drawn into characters and landscapes that we can empathize with, we can, metaphorically speaking, help shoulder their burden, be on the long trail with them whatever the landscapes, the hurdles, incidents and other people may place in their literary way. In this volume such luminaries as Jack London, Kate Chopin, O Henry, Bret Harte and many others bring their talents to this remarkable volume.1 - Short Stories - American Realism - An Introduction2 - The Gift of the Magi by O Henry3 - Desiree's Baby by Kate Chopin4 - To Build a Fire by Jack London5 - The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman6 - The Luck of Roaring Camp by Bret Harte7 - An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce8 - A Pair of Silk Stockings by Kate Chopin9 - The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky by Stephen Crane10 - A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett11 - The Story of An Hour by Kate Chopin12 - The Furnished Room by O Henry13 - The Outcasts of Poker Flat by Bret Harte14 - A New England Nun by Mary E Wilkins Freeman15 - The Ransom of Red Chief by O Henry

    Summary:

The inevitable is understood by each and every one of us who faces the final calling. So too are the effects on those left behind. The memories are there but the empty space, the void can never be refilled. It remains a dark, unreliable pit of loneliness. The sadness and often depression, the lack of will to continue may swamp us all. Unquenchable, undeniable. But loss can, after mourning, give the opportunity to reappraise the lost and how we can each move forward. In the literary world an accessible balance can be given. In this volume Anton Chekhov, H P Lovecraft, James Joyce, D H Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield and many, many others bring their pens to bear on this most heartfelt of subjects.Genius has many names.1 - Short Stories About Death, Dying and Loss - An Introduction2 - The Dead by James Joyce3 - The Lagoon by Joseph Conrad4 - The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe5 - Living or Dead by Rabrindinath Tagore6 - Misery by Anton Chekhov7 - On the Gull's Road by Willa Cather8 - The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield9 - The District Doctor by Ivan Turgenev10 - The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe11 - Odour of Chrysanthemums by D H Lawrence12 - Laura by Saki13 - Silence by Leonid Nikolaevich Andreyev14 - The Law of Life by Jack London15 - The Facts in the Case of Monsieur Valdemar by Edgar Allan Poe16 - The Siege of Berlin by Alphonse Daudet17 - The Fly by Katherine Mansfield18 - The Boarded Window by Ambrose Bierce19 - What the Moon Brings by H P Lovecraft20 - The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin21 - Eveline by James Joyce22 - The Life of Ma Parker by Katherine Mansfield23 - In No Strange Land by Katharine Butler24 - The Luck of Roaring Camp by Bret Harte25 - The Victory by Rabindranath Tagore26 - The Matador of Five Towns by Arnold Bennett27 - Roger Malvin's Burial by Nathaniel Hawthorne

    Summary:

Loss in any form seems to burden us with more weight than anything that can possibly be gained or learnt from. The loss of a person, a loved one, is often overwhelming. Lives so interwoven that the severing or loss of one life leaves the other weakened, unable to function for some time. Recovery comes in a myriad of forms but is usually debilitating, slow and, in the end, we are not as whole as we once were. It is a subject that authors return to again and again. It is inevitable that at some point in their lives grief has struck them, hollowed them out, but, for some, this dreadful experience is used to nourish words, to form a narrative, a beginning, middle and end to relay and share with others the 'what' and the 'why' and perhaps some words of comfort too.Our classic authors guiding us through this volume include Katherine Mansfield, D H Lawrence, Luigi Pirandello, Mary Butts and a host of others.1 - Short Stories About Grief - An Introduction2 - The Mourner by Mary Shelley3 - They by Rudyard Kipling4 - Life of Ma Parker by Katherine Mansfield5 - Mother Sauvage (La Mere Sauvage) by Guy de Maupassant6 - The Altar of the Dead - Part 1 by Henry James7 - The Altar of the Dead - Part 2 by Henry James8 - Odour of Chrysanthemums by D H Lawrence9 - Hide And Seek or Pliatki by Fyodor Sologub10 - Tennessee's Partner by Bret Harte11 - Misery by Anton Chekhov12 - War by Luigi Pirandello13 - The Canary by Katherine Mansfield14 - Silence by Leonid Nikolaevich Andreyev15 - The Miracle by John Davys Beresford16 - A Complete Recovery by Barry Pain17 - The General's Will by General Jelihovsky18 - The Vendetta by Guy de Maupassant19 - Them Others by Stacy Aumonier20 - A Responsibility by Henry Harland21 - The Fly by Katherine Mansfield22 - A Dead Womans Secret by Guy de Maupassant23 - Since I Died by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps24 - The Border Line by D H Lawrence25 - After the Funeral by Mary Butts26 - John Mortonson's Funeral by Ambrose Bierce27 - The Grave by Guy de Maupassant

    Summary:

Diplomacy by other means may, at times, sound heroic. A fight for principles and ideals carried out by young men armed to the teeth and directed by older men in pursuit of their own version of glory for themselves and their Nations. Right will triumph over wrong. But war can be an illusion, stirred up by schemers and opportunists to take something from other nations that may or may not be right. As blood and limb are sacrificed the true cost is seen but often set to one side as the dispute becomes embedded in emotions and reason falls away. In this volume our classic authors including Victor Hugo, Thomas Wolfe, Ambrose Bierce, Ford Madox Ford and many others explore the many facets of this problem and its human dimensions. 1 - Short Stories About War - An Introduction2 - Roger Malvin's Burial by Nathaniel Hawthorne3 - A Fight with a Cannon by Victor Hugo4 - A Horseman in the Sky by Ambrose Bierce5 - Pink Flannel by Ford Maddox Ford6 - Two Friends by Guy de Maupassant7 - War by Luigi Pirandello8 - The Fly by Katherine Mansfield9 - An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose_Bierce10 - The Devil Light by Edgar Wallace11 - The Siege of Berlin by Alphonse Daudet12 - Red Tape by May Sinclair13 - A Cullenden of Virginia by Thomas Wolfe14 - The Revolutionist by Mikhail Petrovich Artzybashev15 - Spud Trevor of the Red Hussars by Sapper16 - Chickamauga by Ambrose Bierce17 - The Bowmen by Arthur Machen18 - Wodjabet by C E Montague19 - The Casualty List by Winifred Holtby20 - The Loathly Opposite by John Buchan21 - The Strange Looking Man by Fanny Kemble Johnson22 - The German Spy by William Hope Hodgson23 - The Soul of a Regiment by Talbot Mundy24 - My First Goose by Isaac Babel25 - The Locket by Kate Chopin26 - Them Others by Stacy Aumonier27 - The Story of a Conscience by Ambrose Bierce

    Summary:

Murder comes in two familiar forms. Both are heinous and most unlikely to gather any sympathy for the actual act itself from anyone, whatever the circumstances or the reasons. Whether as a crime of passion with high emotions or a cold dispassionate plot to take life in order to gain in some way, the act strikes us all as somehow inhuman. Beneath us as civilised beings. But however we cloak our animal instincts the need to remove a human being and gain relief from abuse or gain from money, the term is just the same - MURDER.Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, J M Barrie, W W Jacobs and many others bring their literary heft to bear in as calculating a way as any killer could. 1 - Short Stories About Murder - An Introduction2 - The Murders in the Rue Morgue - Part 1 by Edgar Allan Poe3 - The Murders in the Rue Morgue - Part 2 by Edgar Allan Poe4 - Markheim by Robert Louis Stevenson5 - The Vendetta by Guy de Maupassant6 - The Story of B 24 by Arthur Conan Doyle7 - A Jury of Her Peers by Susan Glaspell8 - The Trial for Murder by Charles Dickens9 - The Caballero's Way by O Henry10 - Better Dead by J M Barrie11 - The Easter Egg by Saki12 - Mother Sauvage (La Mere Sauvage) by Guy de Maupassant13 - The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe14 - Cheating The Gallows by Israel Zangwill15 - In A Grove by Ryunosuke Akutagawa16 - August Heat by W F Harvey17 - Brothers by Sherwood Anderson18 - The Green Light by Barry Pain19 - The Hand by Guy de Maupassant20 - The Cask of Amontillardo by Edgar Allan Poe21 - A Pastoral Horror by Arthur Conan Doyle22 - In The Dark by Edith Nesbit23 - Lost Hearts by M R James24 - Ben Pitcher's Elly by Mary E Mann25 - The Hounds of Fate by Saki26 - Claude Gueux by Victor Hugo 27 - The Repairer of Reputations - Part 1 by Robert W Chambers28 - The Repairer of Reputations - Part 2 by Robert W Chambers29 - The Limping Ghost by Frederick Cowles30 - The Story of the Green House, Wallington by Allen Upward31 - The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe32 - Talma Gordon by Pauline E Hopkins33 - The Moonlit Road by Ambrose Bierce34 - The Murderer by Mikhail Bulgakov35 - For the Blood is the Life by F Marion Crawford36 - A Twin Identity by Edith Stewart Drewery37 - The Octoroon's Revenge by Ruth D Todd38 - An Expiation by Arabella Kenealy39 - God Sees The Truth But Waits by Leo Tolstoy40 - The Kit Bag by Algernon Blackwood41 - The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller by Gustave Flaubert42 - The Murder in an Omnibus by Harold Begbie43 - Lord Arthur Savile's Crime - Part 1 by Oscar Wilde44 - Lord Arthur Savile's Crime - Part 2 by Oscar Wilde45 - The Absence of Mr Glass by G K Chesterton46 - The Middle Toe of the Right Foot by Ambrose Bierce47 - The Lie by Leonid Andreyev48 - The Three Sisters by W W Jacobs49 - Mateo Falcone by Prosper Merimee

    Summary:

Life has the capacity of great moments and attainment, of lives well lived, fulfilling for ourselves and for those we touch. But for others life is arduous. There is no spark to ignite the curiosity, to explore and achieve a stability and a growth to their lives. Indeed their lives, in their own eyes, become almost meaningless, their sense of themselves subsumed under a myriad of problems, whether real or imagined. Seismic events in a life might crush them; the loss of a loved one for instance. Coping is difficult, support hard to find and isolation abounds. We never really know the reason or motivation but sometimes one final, dreadful way out is the solution. In this volume our authors including, Amy Levy, Willa Cather, Honore de Balzac, O Henry, Franz Kafka and a wealth or others explore stories that help us to understand and recognise a tragic circumstance.1 - Short Stories About Suicide - An Introduction2 - Suicides by Guy de Maupassant3 - The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostovesky4 - A Hunger Artist by Franz Kafka5 - The Legacy by Virginia Woolf6 - The Informer by Joseph Conrad7 - Claude Gueux by Victor Hugo8 - The Furnished Room by O Henry9 - The Mourner by Mary Shelley10 - The Victory by Rabindranath Tagore11 - A Passion in the Desert by Honore De Balzac12 - An Imaginative Woman by Thomas Hardy13 - An Egyptian Cigarette by Kate Chopin14 - Volodya by Anton Chekhov15 - Paul's Case by Willa Cather16 - A Slav Soul by Alexander Kuprin17 - Cohen of Trinity by Amy Levy18 - The Story of A Conscience by Ambrose Bierce19 - The Cold Embrace by Mary Elizabeth Braddon20 - Blessed Are the Meek by Mary Webb21 - The Crystal Man by Edward Page Mitchell22 - The End of a Show by Barry Pain23 - An Outcast of the People by Bithia Mary Croker24 - A Responsibility by Henry Harland25 - When Spirits Steal by Philippa Forest26 - The Spider by Hanns Heinz Ewers27 - The Quadroons by Lydia Maria Child28 - Sokratics in the Strand by Amy Levy29 - In the Penal Colony by Franz Kafka

He was a nephew to Julia Ward Howe, the American poet and writer of 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic'. Crawford was educated at St Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire and then on to Cambridge University, the University of Heidelberg and the University of Rome. In 1879 he went to India, to study Sanskrit and then to edit The Indian Herald. In 1881 he returned to America to continue his Sanskrit studies at Harvard University. His family became increasingly concerned about his employment prospects. After an attempt at a singing career as a baritone was ruled out, he was encouraged to write. In December 1882 his first novel, 'Mr Isaacs', was published and was an immediate hit as was his second novel 'Dr Claudius' in 1883. In October 1884 he married Elizabeth Berdan and encouraged by his excellent start to a literary career they returned to Sant Agnello, Italy to make a permanent home, buying the Villa Renzi that then became Villa Crawford. In the late 1890s, Crawford began work on his historical works which would later include 'Corleone', in 1897, the first major treatment of the Mafia in literature. Crawford is also exceedingly popular and anthologized as a short story writer of bizarre and creepy tales. Francis Marion Crawford died at Sorrento on Good Friday 1909 at Villa Crawford of a heart attack. On the death of a cruel man, the terms of a secret are demanded from him to no avail. Have you ever dreamt you could fly? Or imagined what it would be like to glide and swoop through the sky like a bird? Do you let your mind soar to unknown, magical spaces?

In Flights of Fancy, Richard Dawkins explains how nature and humans have learned to overcome the pull of gravity and take to the skies. From the mythical Icarus, to the sadly extinct but spectacular bird Argentavis magnificens, from the Wright flyer and the 747, to the Tinkerbella fairyfly and the Peregrine falcon. But it is also about flights of the mind, about escaping the everyday through science, ideas and imagination.
