In this episode of The Diversity Podcast, I sit down with Filipino photojournalist George Calvelo [https://www.georgecalvelo.com/] to explore his incredible career and how it intersects with his identity. George has spent over a decade documenting life in the Philippines, capturing everything from everyday moments to major natural disasters, and shining a light on communities often overlooked.
Together, we discuss George’s beginnings in photojournalism, his powerful projects—including those focused on remote communities, untold stories—and his experiences covering the Philippines' vulnerability to typhoons and calamities. George shares how these stories have shaped his perception of his homeland and influenced his understanding of his country. Now based in Australia, George reflects on his journey, his current personal projects, and the importance of telling stories that matter.
Join us for this inspiring conversation about photography, identity, and the transformative power of visual storytelling.
In this episode of the Diversity Podcast, we speak in the native Oirad-Kalmyk language about how Oirad-Kalmyk women defied societal norms with their strength, bravery, and independence, often demonstrating that their customs and their strong spirit held more power than the khan himself.

What is generational trauma, and how does it influence our lives? Why don't older generations acknowledge this type of trauma, and what is my personal experience with it?
Discover why this episode is exceptionally personal and vulnerable as I share my own journey. I will also touch on how the tragic chapter of Kalmyk history: the Siberian Exile of 1943, during which Kalmyk people were deported to Siberia and spent 13 years stigmatised as 'enemies of the nation' might have influenced us. Also, we will explore how this experience has impacted future generations and examine how generational trauma affects us on unconscious levels with the help of an expert.
