What happens when God’s calling is bigger than other people's opinions? After more than 30 years in television news, I’m looking back at my journey at Pepperdine University and sharing how faith, perseverance, and trusting God opened doors I never imagined.

I had the privilege of interviewing legendary adventurer, author and advocate Erik Weihenmayer—the first blind person to summit Mount Everest and the only blind person to complete the Seven Summits, climbing the highest peak on every continent.

Erik is coming to Denver as the keynote speaker for Anchor Center for Blind Children’s Sunset in the City gala, making his story and message especially meaningful and to promote the release of his new children's book, Touching Everest.

Anchor Center helps children who are blind or visually impaired develop the confidence, independence and skills they need to thrive—and to understand that vision loss does not have to limit their ambitions.

It’s so important to leave our comfort zones to discover how others live, to hear different perspectives, and to remember this powerful truth: every single person is a child of God, with a soul and a divine calling.

When we open our eyes to that, it completely changes how we see the world and our place in it.

It started in 1998, when TV reporter Jodi Brooks covered a heartbreaking case: a teenage mother was sent to prison after hiding her pregnancy and then drowning her newborn in a toilet.

For Jodi, the story didn’t end with the broadcast. It became a mission to prevent tragedies like that from happening again. She helped spark a movement that led to “Safe Haven” laws—giving desperate parents a last-resort option to surrender a newborn safely at places like hospitals or fire stations, anonymously and without interrogation.
