First Reading: 2 Corinthians 5: 14-21

Brothers and sisters:

The love of Christ urges us on, 
 because we are convinced that one has died for all; 
 therefore all have died. 
 And he died for all, 
 that those who live might live no longer for themselves, 
 but for him who died and was raised for them.
 From now on, therefore, 
 we regard no one according to the flesh; 
 even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, 
 we regard him thus no longer.
 Therefore,  if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: 
 the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. 
 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself 
 and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 
 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself,
 not counting their trespasses against them, 
 and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 
 So we are ambassadors for Christ, 
 God making his appeal through us 
 We beg you on behalf of Christ, 
 be reconciled to God.
 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, 
 so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

 ‘You shall not swear falsely, 
 but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’

 Do not swear at all, either by heaven, 
 for it is the throne of God, 
 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, 
 or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 
 And do not swear by your head, 
 for you cannot make one hair white or black. 
 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; 
 anything more than this comes from the evil one.

 First Reading: 2 Corinthians 4: 7-15

Brothers and sisters: 
 We have this treasure (of the apostolate) in earthern vessels, 
 to show that the transcendent power belongs to God 
 and not to us. 
 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; 
 perplexed, but not driven to despair; 
 persecuted, but not forsaken; 
 struck down, but not destroyed; 
 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, 
 so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 
 For while we live, 
 we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, 
 so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 
 So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith 
 aas he had who wrote
 “I believed, and so I spoke”—
 we too believe, and so we speak, 
 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus 
 will raise us also with Jesus, 
 and bring us with you into his presence. 
 For it is all for your sake, 
 so that grace extends to more and more people, 
 it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

 has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 
 If your right eye causes you to sin, 
 pluck it out and throw it away; 
 it is better that you to lose one of your members 
 than that your whole body to be thrown into hell.
 And if your right hand causes you to sin, 
 cut it off and throw it away; 
 it is better that you to lose one of your members 
 than your whole body to go into hell. 

“It was also said, 
 ‘Whoever divorces his wife, 
 let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 
 But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, 
 except on the ground of unchastity, 
 makes her an adulteress; 
 and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

First Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:15-4:1.3-6

Brothers and sisters: 
 To this day whenever Moses is read 
 a veil lies over the minds of the Israelites; 
 but when a person turns to the Lord the veil is removed. 
 Now the Lord is the Spirit, 
 and where the Spirit of the Lord is, 
 there is freedom. 
 And we all, with unveiled face, 
 beholding the glory of the Lord, 
 are being changed into his likeness 
 from one degree of glory to another; 
 for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, 
 we do not lose heart. 

And even if our gospel is veiled, 
 it is veiled only to those who are perishing. 
 In their case the god of this world 
 has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, 
 to keep them from seeing the light 
 of the gospel of the glory of Christ, 
 who is the likeness of God. 
 For what we preach is not ourselves, 
 but Jesus Christ as Lord, 
 with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 
 For it is the God who said, 
 “Let light shine out of darkness,” 
 who has shone in our hearts 
 to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God 
 in the face of Christ.

 “Unless your righteousness
 exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,

 ‘You shall not kill; 
 and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’ 
 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother or sister
 shall be liable to judgment; 
 whoever insults his brother or sister shall be liable to the council, 
 and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire. 
 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, 
 and there remember 
 that your brother or sister has something against you, 
 leave your gift there before the altar and go; 
 first be reconciled to your brother or sister, 
 and then come and offer your gift. 
 Make friends quickly with your accuser, 
 while you are going with him to court, 
 lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, 
 and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; 
 truly, I say to you, 
 you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.

First Reading: Acts 11: 21b-26; 13: 1-3

In those days:
 A great number that believed turned to the Lord. 
 News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, 
 and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 
 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; 
 and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord 
 with steadfast purpose; 
 for he was a good man, 
 full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. 
 And a large company was added to the Lord. 
 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; 
 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. 
 For a whole year they met with the church, 
 and taught a large company of people; 
 and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians.

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers, 
 Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, 
 Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 
 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, 
 the Holy Spirit said, 
 “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul 
 for the work to which I have called them.” 
 Then after fasting and praying 
 they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Let us now pray the Responsorial Psalm:

our word to you has not been Yes and No.

but in him it is always Yes. 
For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. 
That is why we utter the Amen through him, 
to the glory of God. 
But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ

First Reading: Acts 1:12-14

After Jesus had been taken up to heaven,
the Apostles returned to Jerusalem
from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem,
a sabbath day’s journey away. 

When they entered the city
they went to the upper room where they were staying,
Peter and John and James and Andrew,
Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,
James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot,
and Judas son of James.
All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer,
together with some women,
and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

Responsorial psalm:​​Psalm 87:1-2, 3 and 5, 6-7

R/. Glorious things are told of you, O city of God.

His foundation upon the holy mountains
  the Lord loves:
The gates of Zion,

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary of Magdala.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved,
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
“Behold, your mother.”
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
After this, aware that everything was now finished,
in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
Jesus said, “I thirst.”
There was a vessel filled with common wine.
So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop
and put it up to his mouth.
When Jesus had taken the wine, he said,
“It is finished.”
And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit. 

Now since it was preparation day,
in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the
  sabbath,
for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one,
the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken
and they be taken down.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first
and then of the other one who wascrucified with Jesus.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs,
but one soldier thrust his lance into his side,
and immediately Blood and water flowed out.

distributed and resting on each one of them. 
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit 
and began to speak in other tongues, 
as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, 
devout people from every nation under heaven. 
And at this sound the multitude came together, 
and they were bewildered, 
because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 
And they were amazed and wondered, saying, 
“Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 
And how is it that we hear, 
each of us in his own native language? 
Parthians and Medes and Elamites 
and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, 
Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, 
Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene,

we hear them telling in our own tongues 
the mighty works of God.”

Second Reading: Romans 8: 8-17

Brothers and sisters: 

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 

But you are not in the flesh, 
you are in the Spirit 
if the Spirit of God really dwells in you. 
Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ 
does not belong to him. 
But if Christ is in you, 
although your bodies are dead because of sin, 
your spirits are alive because of righteousness. 
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead 
dwells in you, 
he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead 
will give life to your mortal bodies also 
through his Spirit who dwells in you. 

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, 
not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—
for if you live according to the flesh you will die, 
but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body 
you will live. 
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery 
to fall back into fear, 
but you have received the spirit of sonship. 
When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 
it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit 
that we are children of God, 
and if children, then heirs, 
heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, 
provided we suffer with him 
in order that we may also be glorified with him.

First Reading: Acts 28:16-20.30-31

 When we came into Rome,
 Paul was allowed to stay by himself,
 with the soldier that guarded him.

After three days 
 he called together the local leaders of the Jews;
 and when they had gathered, he said to them,
 “Brothers and sisters, though I had done nothing against the people 
 or the customs of our ancestors,
 yet I was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem
 into the hands of the Romans.
 When they had examined me, they wished to set me at liberty,
 because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case.
 But when the Jews objected,
 I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—
 though I had no charge to bring against my nation.
 For this reason therefore 
 I have asked to see you and speak with you,
 since it is because of the hope of Israel
 that I am bound with this chain.”

And he lived there two whole years at his own expense,
 and welcomed all who came to him,
 preaching the kingdom of God
 and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ 
 quite openly and unhindered.

 Jesus said to him,
 “If it is my will that he remain until I come,
 what is that to you? Follow me!”
 
 The saying spread abroad among the brothers and sisters
 that this disciple was not to die;
 yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, 
 “If it is my will that he remain until I come,
 what is that to you?”
 
 This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things,
 and who has written these things;
 and we know that his testimony is true.
 
 But there are also many other things which Jesus did;
 were every one of them to be written,
 I suppose that the world itself 
 could not contain the books that would be written.

In those days: 
 Agrippa the king and Bernice
 arrived at Caesarea to welcome Festus.
 And as they stayed there many days,
 Festus laid Paul’s case before the king, saying,
 “There is a man left prisoner by Felix;
 and when I was at Jerusalem,
 the chief priests and the elders of the Jews
 gave information about him, asking for sentence against him.
 I answered them 
 that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up any one
 before the accused met the accusers face to face,
 and had opportunity to make his defence
 concerning the charge laid against him.
 When therefore they came together here, 
 I made no delay,
 but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal
 and ordered the man to be brought in.

When the accusers stood up,
 they brought no charge in his case of such evils as I supposed;
 but they had certain points of dispute with him
 about their own superstition and about one Jesus, who was dead, 
 but whom Paul asserted to be alive.

Being at a loss how to investigate these questions,
 I asked whether he wished to go to Jerusalem
 and be tried there regarding them.
 But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody
 for the decision of the emperor,
 I commanded him to be held until I could send him to Caesar.”

He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
 He said to him the third time,
 “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
 
 Peter was grieved 
 because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?”
 And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything;
 you know that I love you.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
 Truly, truly, I say to you,
 when you were young,
 you fastened your own belt and walked where you would;
 but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands,
 and another will fasten your belt for you
 and carry you where you do not wish to go.”
 (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.)
 And after this he said to him, “Follow me.”

First Reading: Acts 22:30; 23:6-11

In those days:
 Desiring to know the real reason why the Jews accused Paul,
 the tribune unbound him,
 and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet,
 and he brought Paul down and set him before them.
 
But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees
 and the other Pharisees,
 he cried out in the council, 
 “Brothers and sisters, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees;
 with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead 
 I am on trial.”
 
 And when he had said this,
 a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees;
 and the assembly was divided.
 For the Sadducees say 
 that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit;
 but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.
 Then a great clamour arose;
 and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party 
 stood up and contended,
 “We find nothing wrong in this man.
 What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?”
 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, 
 afraid that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, 
 commanded the soldiers to go down
 and take him by force from among them
 and bring him into the barracks.

The following night the Lord stood by him and said,
 “Take courage, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem,
 so you must bear witness also at Rome.”

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,
 who even at night directs my heart.
 I keep the Lord before me always,
 with him at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

And so, my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;
 even my flesh shall rest in hope.
 For you will not abandon my soul to hell,
 nor let your holy one see corruption.

You will show me the path of life,
 the fullness of joy in your presence,
 at your right hand, bliss forever.

Gospel: John 17:20-26

At that time:
 [Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and prayed, saying]
 “I do not pray for these only,
 but also for those who believe in me through their word,
 that they may all be one;
 even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you,
 that they also may be in us,
 so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
 The glory which you have given me I have given to them,
 that they may be one even as we are one,
 I in them and you in me,
 that they may become perfectly one,
 so that the world may know that you have sent me
 and have loved them even as you have loved me.
 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me,
 may be with me where I am,
 to behold my glory which you have given me
 in your love for me before the foundation of the world.
 O righteous Father, the world has not known you,
 but I have known you;
 and these know that you have sent me.
 I made known to them your name, and I will make it known,
 that the love with which you have loved me
 may be in them, and I in them.”
