Alan Freed was not the one individual responsible of accepting “payola”, however he was among the many most visibly linked to the promulgation of rock n’ roll. Alan Freed has been credited with being the first to popularize the title Rock n’Roll in relation to this specific music style. On November 20, 1959, WABC fired Alan Freed over the payola scandal, which effectively ended Freed’s career as a DJ and force in the record business. On May 19, 1960, Freed and seven other radio figures were arrested and booked at a police station in Manhattan and charged with receiving a total of $116,850 in payola.
