Here's my live set from Flagging In LA!!

What a glorious day! Perfect weather, and amazing location: West Hollywood Park! I had the chance to see many old friends (some of which I had not seen in ages), and to make many new ones. :-) The flaggers were talented and beautiful, as always!

What's interesting here?

I've always had a dream of playing Donna Summer in LA. Many of her tracks relate to LA or Hollywood in one way or another, so I indulged myself a bit with "MacArthur Park", "Carry On", and "This Time I Know It's For Real".

Oh, and there's a complete remake (including new melody) of Dolly Parton's hit, "Islands In The Stream" that I'm smitten with!

I tend to think of Donna Summer as a 70's disco queen, but she had nearly as many Top 40 hits in the 80's as the 70's!

"This Time I Know It's For Real" released in 1989, and reached #7 on the US Top 40 charts.

This track was written and produced by the super-famous Stock Aitken Waterman team, well-known for working with performers like Rick Astley, Bananarama, Dead or Alive, and Kylie Minogue.

As with many remixes, my goal was to make the track a little more danceable and up-to-date, but hopefully still keeping the spirit of the original with its many musical flourishes.

I think a great set is based on an idea, or a vision.

It doesn't have to be complicated. It might be a journey, the style of an artist, how you want listeners to feel, or where you see it being played.

I've read that dancing at a club or bar is going out of style - that people don't want to embarrass themselves, or that everyone wants to be a DJ instead.

If so, this is my humble protest.

If this makes you want to move - even if it's tapping your foot, or nodding your head to the beat - I'll be content!

What's interesting here? There's a cover of the theme from "The Love Boat" with a brilliant arrangement, sung by - Charo! (Remember Charo?) It's fun and zany and genius and I love it!

I've also got a minimal edit I made of Kylie Minogue's "Off With His Shirt" from "Gallavant". ("Galavant" was a brilliant TV musical comedy, and it was a tragedy it was cancelled. Run right out and watch it!)

"Love Will Keep Us Together" and "You're the One That I Want" also got some edits to make them play nice with the other tracks. Classics that are too good to be forgotten!

How can anyone *not* have heard the original version of this song? :-)

A huge hit for ABBA in 1975, and of course it had a stage and movie musical named after it (and that included it).

On closer inspection it is even more brilliant than at first listen. Most tracks have just two musically distinct parts (such as verse and chorus), but "Mamma Mia" has about half a dozen - all depicting the different crazy states of mind of an on-again, off-again relationship.

The unusual sound at the start of the song is the marimba - a brilliant choice that includes an out-of-key note to really heighten the zany emotions.

As with many remixes, my goal was to make the track a little more danceable and up-to-date, but hopefully still keeping the spirit of the original with its many musical flourishes.
