Blue Tomato was responsible for organising several club nights and events across the scene, and this mix was put together to reflect the kind of funky, uplifting house music that worked perfectly for those dancefloors.

Ultra Dirt 2 continued the darker and tougher house sound that started with the first mix in the series.

After the response to Ultra Dirt 1, I wanted to push further into that dirty house vibe with more driving beats, heavier grooves and a slightly more underground edge. It was clear by this point that the series had found its audience.

Ultra Dirt 1 was the start of a mix series where I moved into a darker, dirtier house sound than I was usually known for at the time.

Up to that point, I was mainly associated with funky house, so this was something a bit different. The mix leans more towards chunky basslines, twisted synths and a tougher club sound. It turned out to be really popular and brought in a lot of new followers, which encouraged me to carry on with the series.

This mix takes me right back to the Canal Street dancefloors of Manchester in the mid 2000s. Funked! was originally recorded in 2007 for a friend and never actually made it onto my podcast feed at the time.

By then I had already been DJing on the Manchester scene for a few years and funky house was everywhere. From early evening warm ups through to packed dancefloors late into the night, these tracks were staples across many of the venues around the Village.

The mix brings together a selection of funky house classics that defined that era. Expect uplifting vocals, chunky basslines and plenty of groove, the kind of tracks that would instantly lift a room and keep the dancefloor moving.

Although it sat on a hard drive for years, it still captures the sound and energy of that time, so it felt right to finally share it here.
