  • Phife Dawg x Pharcyde - DollarCabOnLinden (Blendtape)
Few acts are lucky enough to reach the iconic status of ATCQ, and that's exactly what Phife was....an icon. Not only in music, but in pop culture in general. I was gutted to learn of his passing in 2016. His music meant a lot to me growing up, as it did to all of us, so I had to celebrate his 50th birthday today in my own way.
This project is also paying homage to Pharcyde's classic 'Labcabincalifornia', which also turned 25 this past weekend. There are already a bunch of ATCQ-themed tribute mixes to Phife, so I opted to go a different route and use his solo LP 'Ventilation'. I felt that Phife's flow matched up well with the soulful bounce of Labcab's production, courtesy of J Dilla, The Pharcyde, Diamond D, The Beatminerz, and M-Walk. So I fused the 2 together, and the result is 'DollarCabOnLinden'.
Happy 50th birthday to Malik Taylor aka Phife Dawg aka The Funky 5 Footer aka The Trini Gladiator aka Phife Diggy aka 5 Foot Assassin aka Funky Diabetic aka Mutty Ranks!
This mix is also dedicated to our fallen brother DJ Spinbad. Rest in peace

  • Q-Tip X Pete Rock - Return Of The Abstract Blendtape by DJ Filthy Rich [SHORT VERSION]
A blendtape in celebration of Q-Tip's 50th birthday today. His music has always been a huge influence in my life, so it's an honor to work with his team to present this surprise bday gift to him.
I always wanted to hear a full collab with Tip on the mic and Pete Rock on the boards, so I decided to make it myself. I took Q-Tip's vocal's from the 'Amplified' album, and blended them with Pete's fire 'Return Of The SP1200' instrumental LP.
Special thanks to Rachel for inspiring the idea

  • Wu-Tang VS A Tribe Called Quest : A Clan Called Wu - Enter The Marauders
November 9, 1993 will forever go down as one of the greatest days in hip hop history. Two of the genre’s most revered albums dropped on the same day: Wu-Tang Clan’s debut ‘Enter The 36 Chambers’, & A Tribe Called Quest’s third LP ‘Midnight Marauders’. I remember riding my bike to the mall, with money I had earned from my after-school job. I had anticipated this day for awhile, and saved up in advance to pick up both albums (at that age $40 felt like $500). For the months that followed, both albums fought for playing time on my boombox. One moment, I was transported to the boulevard of Linden, and the next to the rugged streets of Shaolin. Those albums stayed in my rotation forever (literally).
To mark the 25th anniversary of both LP’s, I thought it might be a good idea to try and take the vocals from Wu-Tang’s album, and blend them over the instrumentals from Midnight Marauders. I wasn’t sure it would work at first, but as is usually the case, inspiration hit at midnight when I was trying to sleep (the coincidence of the timing is not lost on me). A couple of hours later, I managed to pair up every single Wu-Tang vocal with a suitable beat from MM. The intent was not to improve on the originals in any way….that would be impossible, as I consider them both to be perfect bodies of work. Rather, it was about orchestrating a fun concept, and putting a totally new spin on these well-worn classics. The contrast of Wu’s gritty street raps over Tribe’s jazzy production works in an unexpected way. Now, I present to you my personal tribute to these legendary groups: A Clan Called Wu - “Enter The Marauders”.
