Dmitry Polyakov, also known as Colonel Gregor Anatolyevich Polyakov, was a high-ranking Soviet military intelligence officer and one of the most valuable double agents during the Cold War. Born on July 6, 1921, in Russia, Polyakov served as a colonel in the Soviet military and worked
as a spy for the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Polyakov began his espionage career in the 1960s when he approached the CIA, offering his services as a double agent.
Over the next two decades,he provided a wealth of classified information to the United States, including strategic military plans, technological developments, and insights into Soviet intelligence operations. His knowledge was highly prized and contributed significantly to American understanding of Soviet military capabilities and intentions.
Polyakov's codename within the CIA was "Top Hat," and he played a
crucial role in shaping American policy towards the Soviet Union. His
intelligence helped the U.S. assess the Soviet threat more accurately,
potentially influencing decisions related to arms control negotiations,
military strategy, and overall Cold War dynamics.
Despite his remarkable success as a double agent, Polyakov's activities
eventually drew suspicion within the Soviet intelligence community. In
1986, the KGB arrested him and charged him with espionage. He was tried and found guilty of treason. Polyakov was executed in 1988, marking the end of his remarkable career as a double agent.
