Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially stormed global box offices, pulling in a massive $1.1bn approx. worldwide (Note: Episode filmed prior to this mark). Driven by Nolan's trademark practical scale and an A-list ensemble led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Anne Hathaway, this adaptation breathes gritty, high-stakes life into Homer's ancient text. 

The film naturally invites heavy comparisons to past sword-and-sandal historical epics, most notably Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy (2004) and Zack Snyder’s 300 (2007). While Troy leaned into gritty historical realism and 300 traded in hyper-stylized graphic novel aesthetics, Nolan successfully bridges the gap between the two. He marries the massive, grounded military scale of 2000s historical dramas with a dark, myth-heavy fantasy layer, pushing the boundaries of what a modern blockbuster epic can achieve; with scenes like the Cyclops cave, to the immersive giant whirlpool, Nolan takes us on an epic journey!
