  • Introduction to the DNP Faculty Lead Podcast Channel

Welcome to the DNP Faculty Podcast.  Today, Dr. Maymi and Dr. Bricker will introduce our new podcast.  Below is the transcript for today's Episode.

Welcome, everybody. Today, we're launching our very 1st podcast here at the University of Florida College of Nursing. My name is Dr. Michael Maymi.

I am a clinical associate professor and specialty director for the pediatric Acue Care and Dual Track DNP programs here at the College of Nursing. Today I'm being joined with one of my favorite colleagues. and host, Dr. Christina Bricker. Dr. Bricker. Would you go ahead and introduce yourself?

Thank you, Dr. Maymi. Christina Bricker. Also a clinical associate professor here at the College of Nursing, the University of Florida. specialty director of the family nurse practitioner track, and I'm very happy to be here with you today. Awesome, awesome. So Dr. Bricker and I actually were brainstorming earlier this year and wanted to develop a podcast that was really driven by the faculty, but is for the student experience in our graduate program.

So, Dr. Bricker, what are some of the ideas that we talked about that you really want to highlight in our 1st podcast? Absolutely. We plan to cover the different tracks that we offer here at the University of Florida.

So those who are interested in applying to our programs will understand more about each track, and which track might be best for them, to apply for depending on their career goals, and their personal aspirations. We also plan to cover things that are important to current students, that may not be as easy to cover in classes, such as perhaps examples of leadership, different leadership levels, professional growth, things like that. Yeah, exactly.

I think when we talk about you know, the description of our programs. We want to, you know, give you the best advice when you're selecting the program that you want to get into, and try to demystify some of the myths that are out there, like which programs you have to go into to get into certain areas. And then I also like some of the, what you mentioned about the topics that we want to teach in the classroom, but sometimes don't make their way in the classroom.

So this would be a great place to come and listen to some of the expertise and some of the advice that faculty would give students as they're getting prepared to start that transition from nurse to nurse practitioner. Excellent. What are some ideas that you think our students can participate in with these podcasts?

Oh, absolutely. Yeah, students will love to participate in these podcasts, I think. They can do podcasts about the student experience, what it's like to go to their 1st clinical site.

Students, can talk about patients, how they interact with patients, how they've grown and the nurse practitioner role. It's a huge transition to grow from registered nurse to nurse practitioner, and they can talk about that growth, and then other students can relate to that. I think so.

I think that's awesome The other thing I plan on doing with like my graduate students in my program is I'm going to have them produce their own podcasts, right? And they'll take the, you know, the center stage and be able to talk and disseminate about some of their clinical experiences or some of the disorders that they're seeing regularly within the program. And I think that's a great way for us to really express and establish some of the competency-based education.

You know, with competency-based education, we have to give them classroom education, provide them with clinical experiences. And then it's the repetition that they'll see throughout the program. And being able to come back and disseminate that on this type of platform, I think is super engaging and very motivational for the students to do.

Absolutely. All right. I think other areas that we're considering, I think we talked about, we wanted to make sure that we had some educational opportunities.

So I really see having a couple of series of podcasts on precepting. So we can provide education directly to our preceptors. And then having maybe even some of our preceptors come on as guests, where we can ask them, you know, real life questions on, you know, what they've experienced and how they have seen the growth from our students from the very 1st clinical experience as they transition into that growth into becoming nurse practitioners.

Alright. This kind of sums up our 1st podcast. Again, this one's gonna be relatively short, but be on the lookout.

I'm going to be producing one within the next couple of days on the pediatric acue care program, and then Dr. Bricker and I are going to have another podcast where we'll talk about the family nurse practitioner program. And once we get our um, channel up and we have our webpage available. I'll have a link in there for you guys to put in request.

So if the students or our audience has requests for certain podcasts that they'd like us to go through and go over, please don't hesitate to reach out. All right, thank you guys. Thank you
