Do I Need an MC Number
Whether you need an MC (Motor Carrier) number depends on the type of transportation services you provide in the United States. An MC number is issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and is often associated with interstate commerce and for-hire transportation services.

Here's when you might need an MC number:

  1. Interstate Commerce: If you operate as a for-hire carrier (you get paid to transport goods or passengers) across state or national borders, you'll likely need an MC number.
  2. Broker or Freight Forwarder: If you're brokering transportation services or operating as a freight forwarder in interstate commerce, you'll need an MC number, even if you don’t own trucks or vehicles.
  3. Certain Exceptions: Even if you're moving goods or passengers within a state (intrastate commerce), certain states require an MC number for specific operations.
  4. Transporting Passengers: For-hire motor carriers transporting passengers in interstate commerce will typically need an MC number.
  5. Transporting Regulated Commodities: If you're transporting federally regulated commodities for hire, whether it's within a state or across state lines, you might need an MC number.

It's also worth noting that obtaining an MC number is often linked with the USDOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) number. The USDOT number acts as a unique identifier for companies operating large commercial vehicles. While all for-hire carriers engaging in interstate commerce need an MC number, not all businesses with a USDOT number will need an MC number.

Lastly, always consult the FMCSA website or appropriate transportation consultants when determining your specific needs. Regulations can change, and state-specific requirements might affect your situation.

We offer full trucking authority packages to make the launching of your trucking company business go more smoothly. The Department of Transportation regulates safety so doing it right in the begging is very important.
