Did you know that the average credit card debt in the United States is over $12,000 per person? That means that if you don't have any credit card debt (because Dave Ramsey told you to cut up your cards) some poor soul owes $24,000!
Did you know the average student loan debt in the US is over $37,000?
Finally, the average home loan in the US is over $210,000.
It is not surprising that when Jesus explained what his kingdom is like he used a picture that all of us could understand, DEBT!
This weekend at CrossWalk Church in Phoenix we are continuing our message series entitled, "The Kingdom". In this series we are unlocking the parables of Jesus. And Jesus uses a parable that uses debt and debt forgiveness to help us understand how God works.
In Matthew 18 Jesus tells a story about debt, but not just a little debt. He is describing Silicon Valley Bank type debt. This debt is crushing, shut down the bank debt. The debt is over a billion dollars. And this debt isn't owed by a bank, but by individuals like us.
We don't want to ruin the surprise of the message, but, spoiler alert, Jesus pays and forgives the debt. But the most exciting part is that he changes the heart and lives of those (like us) whose debt is forgiven.
