The vocabulary of CRIME AND social VALUES  by Paul Davies

The pioneering French sociologist Émile Durkheim theorized that attitudes towards crime and punishment represent an expression of a society's core values. Certainly, there is a strong element of moral relativity; that which is considered legal or illegal, acceptable of unacceptable, varies from society to society. However, we must also consider the idea that, in most societies, law, justice and punishment are imposed from 'above'. Even in modern democracies, key ideas about crime and punishment originated in darker, more oppressive times and the idea still persists that the criminal justice system exists to protect the rich and powerful. With this in mind, it is interesting to examine the words used in English to describe various crimes and criminals. With crimes that are almost universally abhorrent, there is little ambiguity. The terms used express revulsion and are condemning in tone. Usually these crimes are related to murder and sexual violence and the vocabulary employed is narrow and resistant to alternative interpretation. It is common for murderers, rapists or paedophiles to be described as 'cold blooded' and as 'preying' on their victims, the implication being that they are somehow reptilian and less than human. The celebrated US author Truman Capote named his iconic account of a bungled house break-in, the murder of the family who lived there and the subsequent execution of the two petty thieves involved IN COLD BLOOD. Obviously the ambiguity of the title is deliberate. Who acted in cold blood? Was it the thieves when they murdered an innocent family? Was it the state when it executed the murderers? Was it both? Other crimes carry a wider, more dynamic vocabulary, indicating a disparity between public attitudes to crime and the legal interpretations that are imposed upon the public. They also provide an insight into popular culture and myth. For example, the noun 'thief', the verb 'thieve' and the adjective 'thieving' usually have negative connotations. A thief is normally thought to be an unpleasant person.  If someone is described as 'thieving', the tone is almost always condemnatory. The thief is often thought to be the lowest of criminal categories and it is common to hear the phrase 'petty thief' to describe someone who, rather than being a 'professional criminal', is simply opportunist in nature. However, it is also common to hear the government, the tax department and banks described as 'thieves' or as 'thieving'. This would indicate a popular hostility to government and finance. The verb 'steal' has similar negative connotations. It is common to hear people complain that banks 'steal' their money. Likewise, the term 'pickpocket' has negative connotations. A pickpocket never steals from institutions, only ever the public. On the other hand, the noun 'Robber' has generally neutral or even positive connotations. A 'Bank Robber' is seen by many as a professional criminal and even, at times, worthy of respect. There is a famous song by the London-based punk band ‪The Clash‬ called 'Bank

Robber' which mythologises the professional, non-violent nature of the crime with doublenegative lyrics like "My daddy was a bank robber but he didn't hurt nobody." The noun 'Robbery' (used to describe the crime itself rather than the perpetrator) usually has neutral connotations and is used most commonly in reportage. Occasionally though it can be used negatively, usually to describe high prices, as in the term 'daylight robbery'. However, the verb 'Rob' is commonly used in association with mythic, redistributive folk heroes such as Robin Hood, who 'robbed the rich to feed the poor'. The noun 'Burglar' shares similar professional criminal connotations, as does the verb 'Burgle' and the noun 'Burglary', used to describe the crime itself.

We also say it could be possible for you to have a table at nine in the restaurant.


If you are a Technically trained sales assistant it we would be more likely to use can or could
I think I know what the problem is that could be the pump or maybe we can imagine it's the ventilator
however if you are less qualified we are not so sure about something so we do not use can or could

That might be the pump it might be the ventilator there again it may be some other thing which is not operating correctly.

Now a lesson about looming and lurking I would like to remind you that looming is about something on the horizon
it might be a good thing or a bad thing so if you have a photocopier you know that when you rent this machine you will need to check the 
toner every six weeks because the problem is looming.

However if you don't know much about a machine and you're not able to discern what exactly the problem is 
you would go with the M language so I understand that there's a problem with the machine and you said 
there was a noise near the heat sink so that may be a problem with the circuit will need to send somebody 
to check.
So here we could say that there's a problem lurking in the machine the problem is that we didn't see 
a problem in advance.
When we don't know about something, and when it is hidden we say it was lurking.
Looming is when it's obvious and we know it is coming.

The difference between cancer and back problems unfortunately cancer is something that lurks 
and back problems loom due to an accumulation of stress on the back on the spine.

Con artists confidence tricksters by Paul Davies

There is an old saying in Britain “if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is”. We have all heard stories about charming people, appearing out of nowhere, who smooth talk people, winning them over and buttering them up by paying them excessive compliments, using dialogue which repeats words like trust and loyalty using phrases such as “only you really understand me” or “you’re like the brother sister I never had” enticing them into putting increasing amounts of money into a get rich scheme only to disappear at the moment when the pay off is anticipated. Often, confidence tricksters also known as con artists will try to split up the mark’s existing friendships and family ties so that the mark also known as the victim can be more easily worked on. Many small confidence tricks or short cons involve appealing to people’s better nature for example the con artist asking for money or help with a sob story while in reality the money is needed for other purposes. However, larger, more elaborate cons known as Long cons usually involve appealing to people’s greed or lust. There’s an old saying “you can’t con an honest man”.

There is now a famous long con involving fictitious United Nations Aid money. The person claiming to represent a Third World government tells his or her mark, in the strictest confidence hence the term confidence trick and with excessive flattery, that there he or she has access to millions of dollars in United Nations Aid money but needs a foreign bank account in order to smuggle the money out of the country. If the mark / victim can help him or her by opening a bank account that he or she can access they will then split the money. He or she will also need a small amount of money in a bank account to cover expenses usually only 2000 or 3000 pounds and to make the accounts appear legitimate. Initially of course all will go well and the mark may even receive some money as payback. However the con artist will then explain that there is even more money to be made and the con becomes more elaborate. The mark will then reinvest the money he or she has made back into the scheme in order to make more. As the con progresses, the mark will be asked to put more and more money into the account as the stakes get higher and higher.

There is an interesting flaw in human nature that dictates the more a person has already invested in the scheme, the more they will invest in order to retrieve that money. It explains the success of the gambling industry. Of course, the con artist will become less flattering and more intimidating as the con progresses. As the idea of stealing money intended for famine relief is in itself highly immoral, the mark will be unlikely to go to the police or tell anyone what is happening and will instead, continue to throw good money after bad in the hope of striking it rich. Internet has proved to be a golden opportunity for many elaborate tricksters and online long cons are on the increase, some elaborate, some comically bad. If someone is an obvious mark we might warn them that a confidence trickster can “see you coming”. We will warn them that “you can never be too careful”.
