Benjamin Barkley is a cantankerous patient who has suffered from abdominal pains for years however when Dr Kildare examines him he suspects acute appendicitis and needs to persuade the cantankerous Barkley to undergo an operation. Meantime Dr Gillespie maintains that Barkley has chronic enteritis brought on by his own bad temper.

When she comes to she hates Dr Kildare and wants to hide from the world for the rest of her life. Dr Kildare may have saved her life but he has destroyed her incentive to live and now he needs to help her to find the ability to cope with it.
