Do ten push-ups today.
The lie I taught in medical school: if you can walk on a treadmill, upper-body strength does not matter for heart risk. That's the myth. Here's some evidence that questions it.
Yang et al. followed 1,104 male firefighters (~10-year follow-up; JAMA Netw Open 2019;2(2):e188341). 37 CVD outcomes. >40 push-ups vs <10: IRR 0.04 (95% CI 0.01–0.36). Push-up capacity more strongly associated with CVD events than submaximal treadmill in this cohort.

Honest caveat: observational firefighter men — not an RCT proving push-ups cause lower CVD risk. Do not over-generalize to women, frail older adults, or injury without clearance. Capacity is a fitness marker; ten reps today is a starting check, not a magic prevention dose. Modify as needed. Educational only. Not medical advice.
Today's drop: Do ten push-ups today — strict form if you can. Note a max set if easy; use an easier variation if hard. Retest in a few weeks. Strength is a vital sign you can check on the floor.
