  • The Killers (1946)
It goes without saying that there’s gonna be some dangerous dames all March for our noir month we’ve dubbed THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR. Today’s feature has a lady that is so stunning, so femme fatale, that she’s got Burt Lancaster’s bisexual ass simping to the grave. I mean, this dude did time for this lady by taking the fall for her while she was sitting at a table with her actual boyfriend. It’s really not clear if he ever got to second base. Either way, the Swede is dead, and who else but an insurance guy is gonna piece this puzzle together? We’re talking Robert Siodmak’s 1947 adaptation of the Ernest Hemingway story “THE KILLERS” starring a sad-ass Burt Lancaster, a knockout Ava Gardner and Edmund O’Brien who ain’t a bad little piece of chicken in his own right. We also got a little bit of post-Oscar conversation as well. Congrats to Oppenheimer. Here’s a link to the movie (not Oppenheimer): https://archive.org/details/thekillers1946usafeaturingburtlancasteravagardneredmondobrienfilmnoirfullmovie_202001

  • Gun Crazy (1950)
It just keeps getting deadlier and deadlier as we delve deeper into THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR! It’s classic film noir five days a week all March and we got some strange lovers here who go together like guns and ammunition. Bart is a gun pervert. He’s known this from a young age. He got sent to reform school over his gun perversion. Annie is also a gun pervert which has our perv protagonist absolutely chubbing while he watches her William Tell routine. Makes sense these crack shots would fall in love, except he’s trying to be a nice boy but Annie wants more and she wants to take it all using her favorite tool. There’s only one way this can end but they sure had a lot of fun along the way. We’re discussing the beautifully directed Joseph H. Lewis film based on an ok script ghost written by Dalton Trumbo. It’s “GUN CRAZY” from 1950 starring Peggy Cummins & John Dall. This movie has its flaws but it’s a lot of fun. A perfect example of a movie we might pick over another we might have technically scored higher but it’s a very well shot noir. A straight shooting wild ride of its time. Pretty easy to find online. • The Killing (1956)
NYEAH SEE!? Who says that? Who says “Nyeah See”? Is it Jimmy Cagney? Edward G. Robinson? That tiny mobster guy in the Looney Tunes cartoon? I can’t exactly remember. March is classic Film Noir five days a week and we’re dramatically calling it “THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR” because it’s cool and it makes us feel cool to say it. Bob and Angela LOVE this shit so as far as they’re concerned, it’s bangers all month long and today is no exception. We’re tackling our third Stanley Kubrick movie for the show with one of his earliest pictures and his first “serious” film (as he sort of puts it) and it just happens to be one of the best heist movies of all time. Johnny Clay’s got some boys together but some of the elements are a bit volatile. There’s some sad girls and some bad girls. Crooked cops, clown masks and some Pro Wrestling. Of course we’re speaking of “THE KILLING” from 1956 starring Sterling Hayden, Elisha Cook & Marie Windsor. One of the most thrilling noirs this month and you really feel that end sequence. But why is it called “The Killing”, though? Which kill is “The Killing”? Of course you can often find these older movies online if you know where to look. • The Brasher Doubloon (1947)
It’s just another Marlowe Monday. I’m glad it’s not a Sunday. Because my fun day is Marlow Monday. For our noir theme that we’re calling THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR we talking about an adapted film featuring our iconic private dick created somewhere between blackouts by Raymond Chandler. Our third Marlowe Monday feature’s Philip comes off a little more dapper than Humphrey Bogart and Dick Powell. George Montgomery might swag a little more than Powell but still less than Bogie. Montgomery don’t swag like either but his portrayal of Philip Marlowe in John Brahm’s 1947 adaptation of Chandler’s “The High Window” still scratches that hard boiled itch. We’re talking about “THE BRASHER DOUBLOON” and it’s easy to find online. Like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNJSGYeUivU . You gotta admire the camera technology Marlowe shows off in this one. If that lady wasn’t so worried about a coin she would still be walking around with her nose in the air.

  • Nightmare Alley (1947)
THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR is what we’re calling our jam packed noir month all March long and we’re delving into all realms of seedy endeavors. Makes sense that a traveling carnival and freak show might have its own share of sheisters and troubled souls. Stan sees a golden road of fame and fortune through trickery. He’ll use up, sleep with and toss aside all those in his path to get what he wants. One day he meets his match and the cries of the chicken loving Geek beckon him. Maybe pretending he could raise the dead was a bit much. We’re talking about the strange and unique 1947 noir from the prolific screenwriter and director Edmund Goulding called “NIGHTMARE ALLEY” starring Tyrone Power, Joan Blondell, Coleen Gray, Helen Walker and more. Hear us explain how this whole story can be told in a 10 page Chick Tract. Here’s a link to a good quality version of it: https://archive.org/details/nightmare-alley-1947-720p

  • The Zone Of Interest (2023)
Some extra fun this month as we explore the rest of what we haven’t seen amongst the 2024 BEST PICTURE OSCAR NOMINATIONS. Well, we’re skipping the fun for this particular week because we finally get to the disturbing and unsettling Jonathan Glazer film about the Holocaust that centers specifically on its perpetrators. Perpetrators with wives and children and pets. Husbands who seek to rise within the mundane bureaucracy of an ethnostate that administers horror just on the other side of a wall. You can’t see it but you can hear it. Thank god only the characters in the film could smell it but too many seemed rather used to it. Glazer said his new film, “THE ZONE OF INTEREST” starring Christian Friedel & Sandra Hüller, is about the present. Where we find ourselves in the present, drifting along the wake of the holocaust’s legacy, leaves us with plenty to ponder and a surprising amount to observe. The past isn’t so far gone. It has a way of catching up.
THE ZONE OF INTEREST’s Oscar Nominations:
    Best Picture
    Best International Feature
    Best Director
    Best Writing / Adapted Screenplay
    Best Sound

  • Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR, our celebration of classic noir, continues in abundance and we land on one wild flick involving another iconic private dick that isn’t Philip Marlow. We’re talking about Mickey Spillane’s two fisted dirtbag protagonist “Mike Hammer” as played by Ralph Meeker In Robert Aldrich’s 1955 genre-bending noir, “KISS ME DEADLY”. Some dame that looks a lot like a young Cloris Leachman gets picked up by a two-bit detective. Next thing he knows, she’s dead and he’s knocked out in a car and people seem to be real desperate to find something before he does. Also starring Maxine Cooper and Gaby Rodgers, KISS ME DEADLY is a unique and strange story adapted very loosely by screenwriter A.I. Bezzerides. This noir became wildly influential and we get to the bottom of why.

  • The Set - Up (1949)
We’re crossing into the seedy sporting life for our film noir theme we’re calling “THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR” and what sport feels more noir than boxing? Stoker feels like he’s got one more good fight in him but his poor wife is sick of seeing his battered mug. She doesn’t want the violence to ruin her marriage. Meanwhile, some scuzzy managers are making a set-up bet that they don’t want to let the older boxer in on. Stoker drops any other time so maybe he doesn’t need to know, right? We’re taking in the rich environments and vivid characters in Robert Wise’s 1949 boxing noir “THE SET-UP” and it’s maybe a little too loose from the themes of it’s original source material (a poem by Jospeh M. March) but a very worthy boxing feature in and of itself. It stars Robert Ryan, Audrey Totter, George Tobias and more. Will Stoker come out on top and get one more chance to hold his head up high or will he help his managers fill a gangster’s pockets? It’s a breezy noir to sit through with an exciting boxing match to boot. Check it out here if you like: https://archive.org/details/1949thesetupnadiepuedevencermecombatetrucadorobertwise
