Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast episodes

  • E.T. The Extra - Terrestrial (1982)
November’s theme is COMFORT FOOD and every Monday we go full nostalgic with a film from our childhood and why not start off the nostalgia episodes with a movie that defined a childhood (and child marketing) for an entire generation? Steven Spielberg was already pretty much Hollywood’s golden boy at the time and it was cemented into eternity upon the success of his heartfelt 1982 magnum opus “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial”. For kids of a certain age, this movie was a cornerstone and we can’t imagine it not being effective to many generations beyond. A boy befriends an alien with the abilities of telekinesis, healing, parasitic bondage, drying up like old dog poo and love. The rest is history. Join us in this heartfelt discussion where we attempt to not say curse words and fail miserably.

  • Radio (2003)
For our MOVIE ROULETTE REVIEWS we draw movie categories from a hat and then select movies from a list pertaining to that category and for today’s review we picked a category called A CHALLENGING PERFORMANCE FOR EVERYBODY which is all about actors portraying people with intellectual disabilities and we fell upon the 2003 film “RADIO” directed by Mike Tollin and starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ed Harris. Cuba plays James “Radio” Kennedy, a mentally challenged person who became ingrained into a High School Football program in a small town in South Carolina. James Kennedy is an actual person that passed away in 2019 at the age of 73. Leading roles dried up a little bit for Cuba following this film’s release and we wouldn’t say he did a bad job but this movie will probably give you diabetes and it may be too easy to predict the next line of dialogue as you watch the saccharine scenes unfold. Our next category selection that we pick at the end of the episode will apply for the rest of the month and what we select is a pleasant surprise that totally works with our November theme of COMFORT FOOD. So sit at the table and let this episode slide down your gullet and find out what that next category is.

  • The Sum Of All Fears (2002)
We’re finally getting around to our RANDOMLY GENERATED MOVIE REVIEW that we randomly picked after discussing Roman Polanski’s “Oliver Twist” several weeks ago and we’re going full-on DAD BONER THEATER because we’re gonna be cracking open our very first movie in the world of Tom “Fancy” Clancy. Yep. This is the most we’ve encountered of the fictional character known as Jack Ryan and this soft reboot starring Ben Affleck as the third person to ever play this character seems ultra relevant in a new post 9-11 world but, in fact, this movie was completed before that happened. We’re talking about Phil Alden Robinson’s 2003 thriller “THE SUM OF ALL FEARS”. M’man James Cromwell is in this thought, as well as a swaggering Morgan Freeman mic dropping intelligence bombs on the heads of the young folk under his wing. That person is Jack Ryan and HOLY SHIT A NUCLEAR BOMB GOES OFF IN THIS MOVIE. NOBODY TOLD ME! BALTIMOOOOOORRRREEEE!!!! WHERE’S JOHN WATERS!?!? WHO DID THIS??? WHO!?!?!? Stay tuned until the end as we randomly generate our next random movie to review that we will get to. Eventually.

  • Killers Of The Flower Moon (2023)
We humped the hell out of Halloween yesterday and why not just go ahead and do an every weekday drop for this week as well? We’re long overdue to get back to the movies and we’re discussing a much hyped flick that came out about a week and a half ago. It’s based on the true story of systemic serial murder that happened some time after the Osage tribe found oil on some land they were shoved on to. Nothing draws in white men better than their money. We’re talking about Martin Scorsese’s latest film “Killers of the Flower Moon” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons and all your favorite modern country acts that aren’t wearing wallet chains and black t-shirts with some elaborate ace of spades design on it. This episode discussion gives a little space to the details as we really just analyze some acting performances, compare elements of it to the David Grann book it’s based on and reflect on the overall cultural implications in telling a story centered around the Osage people and this story. MILD SPOILING but it’s all historical so it’s not like the information hasn’t been out there. How does Marty do with this story? Come back tomorrow for some dad boner material.

  • Movie Review 6 Pack: John Carpenter's Halloween
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! All month long, we dropped a different horror movie discussion every weekday and now we culminate to our grand HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST FINALE. There’s no better way to go out on our theme, on Halloween, by discussing the first six films in the iconic franchise created by John Carpenter and Debra Hill. Yes. This episode we review: Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1982), Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995). Starring a variety of folk such as Donald Pleasance, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Dan O’Herlihy, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell and Paul Motherfucking Rudd. The franchise has its ups and downs but It’s a fun time in this episode with snappy analysis, goofbaggery, masks and costume changes. We had a damn fine time and a perfect send off to one of the all time greatest months for watching movies. HAPPY HALLOWEEN! See you tomorrow!

  • Taste The Blood Of Dracula (1970)
We’re feeling a little melancholy, not unlike Christopher Lee’s Dracula, because this will be the last Hammer Film Dracula movie we will discuss for HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST. Christopher Lee appears in three more Hammer Films as Dracula but Peter Sasdy’s 1970 film “TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA” will be our last for the season and perhaps that’s for the best because some of Dracula’s choices seem a little unlike what we’ve come to appreciate from our gothic fuckboy. Not that there’s isn’t some fun things to see, like satanic rituals, fabulous pimps, patricide and the tried and true village hottie. Dracula himself may have lost a few things after so many resurrections but he doesn’t lose that classic presence that Christopher Lee provides. Oh, Hammer. We miss you already. You better believe we will revisit their fare in the future.

  • Angst (1983)
It’s HALLOWEEN HUMPEST and we’re humping around with a horror discussion every weekday this month and we’re capping off this week with a fucked up Austrian/German flick that was banned in many theaters in Europe as well as the United States. It was Gerald Kargl’s last and most notorious movie based on a true story. This movie didn’t even get widely distributed until the 2000s. We’re talking about the terrifying movie “Angst” from 1983 starring Erwin Leder as a complete bonkers murder horny psychopath who keeps falling through the system’s cracks until he finally manages to make his way to a desolate house in the forest and all the confusing and terrifying acts are painstakingly drawn to their full conclusions. One of the most disturbing and visceral selections this month. Let us know if you get horny watching this so we can call the proper authorities. There’s a dog in it too.

  • House (1977)
It’s been a weird week in this final full week of HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST. It’s been some pretty crazed haunts and Michael J. Fox enterprising haunts and now we’re back to more crazed haunts in another Japanese feature that somehow, arguably, isn’t the weirdest shit we’re watching this week. Commercial director Nobukiko Obayashi was tapped by Toho Films to make whatever their own version of JAWS should be. After a little industry hot potato and some wild ass ideas from the mind of a little girl, the 1977 film “HOUSE’ was born. A cult classic by western standards but a hit in Japan in its day. Seven girls go to their Aunt’s house who is actually an enraged spirit who is so angry about World War II that her, and the house, will eat these girls and consume their essence with one remaining to carry on for the tortured spirit in physical form. An delightfully insane onslaught of imagination. It’s on MAX and if you ain’t got that shit just watch it here: https://archive.org/details/house_202106

  • Gozu (2003)
It’s our last full week of HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and shit is about to get haunted as we drop what will probably be our strangest movie this month. We’re breaking the MOVIEHUMPERS seal on Takashi Miike and that should tell you most everything you need to know. This isn’t one of his kids movies. We’re deep diving into YAKUZA HORROR territory and for the love of God, don’t go to Nagoya. Don’t let your YAKUZA buddy near that small dog. Don’t go to the restaurant ran by a ghost. Don’t talk to that guy in the field with the half painted face. Don’t go to that hotel with the milk lady and her brother and DEFINITELY don’t go upstairs. Spirits, fables and urban legends collide into a mad fever dream in Takashi Mike’s 2003 cult mindfuck “GOZU”. Can I ask you an earnest question? Can you put me in your body and birth me out? Here’s the archive link to the movie if you want to check it out: https://archive.org/details/gozu.-2003.-unrated.-ws.-dvdrip.-xvi-d-c-00-ld-ud-e
