Publisher's Summary:
The 100 year anniversary of the official use of American military personal identity tags, affectionately known as Dog Tags, recently passed without fanfare. We are currently in a war where the Dog Tag is once again a highly personal item to warriors in every service and their families. Each Dog Tag carries its own human interest story. Receiving it, hanging it around the neck, and feeling it is at once a silent statement of commitment. The tag itself individualizes the human being who wears it within a huge and faceless organization. The armed forces demand obedience, commitment, and duty to a higher cause, but the Dog Tag which hangs privately within their shirts, close to their chests, becomes a part of them. In a way it brings comfort to that fear of every Soldier facing death: I do not want to be forgotten; I will not be unknown. Understanding and sharing the history of Dog Tags , the stories shared with me from personal accounts, the cultural impact on merchandising, and the future within our Armed Services.

Tags!
The history of the dog tag now this is a book any military history buff must have on his shelf. And if said buff doesn't have it, I suggest you find the money and buy it. I would even go so far and recommend to this to any enlisted, NCO or Officer to add this to his reading list.
Worth your time...
Absolutely outstanding. Ginger knows how to tell a story. Highly recommended.
Excellent
This is a very good book. I am doing some research on coins used as identification tags in World War I. I found some very useful information here that I have not found elsewhere. I particularly enjoyed the image of an advertisement in a ca. 1865 Harper's magazine that offered various identity tags for private purchase. Furthermore, the authors states that suttlers created ID tags from coins for a few during the Civil War.
By World War I, the United States had adopted an official tag. That tag was to be approximately the size of a half dollar. Whether the tags that we see today were in fulfillment of the regulation or supplementary in nature I do not know at this time, but I am working on it!
Book of the Year Award
WHAT A GREAT BOOK!!! IT IS TERRIFIC! All should read it whether you have been in service or the child or sibling, the wife or husband, mother or father, or grandparents of one who has served. "DOG TAGS" should make the best seller list of all news media lists.
This is one book which should be placed in all of the school libraries. Many history teachers would find this a great read as one of a list of required reading. The teacher should never force a student to read one book in particular, but this one certainly belongs in a list included for for students to choose. It's a great part of history that should never be forgotten.
