Hey fun book to read
It has tones of history. Cuba has played a major role in US Cuban relations and in 2015 was opend to diplomatic relations under the Obama adminstration and talks of closing Gitmo. Also the cuban missle crisis of 1961 led almost to a boiling of missles being placed on the island. But was averted thanks to the US. Its a good point of history that Cuba is a beatiful Island caught in history and struggles to catch up. But is slowly doing so. Cubans have a right to live where they want to under wet and dey rule established buy Bill Clinton to engage in talks with Fidel Castro. Fun book to read. I recommend it.
Well-done concise history
Starting from 3100 BCE and continuing until 2015, very informative quick read of Cuban history. From native to Spanish conquest, British conquest and then swapping Cuba back to Spain for Florida, Cuba gaining independence after Spanish-American War, various rulers thru to Castro brothers regime. The author explains how USA obtained Guantanamo and the various interventions by the U.S. from 1900 until Castro took over, then the Russian influence on Castro.
Of course much has to be glossed over in such a short read, like Columbus discovery, Castro's revolution, Bay of Pigs disaster, Russian missile crisis, Che Guevara involvement, Kennedy brothers attempts to eliminate Castro, and Kennedy assassination insinuations. But, most is here and can be expanded on in other books in detail if interested. For instance Che Guevara needs to be called out for the blood-thirsty, America-hater that he was, Che and Raul pushed Fidel to be much more radical.
Concise and Questionable
This is a quick, concise, but mediocre history of Cuba. On the one hand, it gives a decent overview of Cuba since the 15th century, especially in relation to international affairs--but on the other hand, I'm not so sure I agree with everything the author, Freeman, has chosen to emphasize in his history.
Selecting 50 events to represent a country's history is a massive challenge--but even so, I was very surprised at some major Cuban events/people Freeman left out, specifically in light of some of the more minor events he chose to include. I was also surprised at the way he chose to portray some events and people. For example:
-Freeman mentions the Arawak natives, but fails to mention the Taino natives. A Taino chief, Hatuey, is notable for leading a (very unsuccessful) rebellion against the Spanish colonials. He is considered Cuba's first national hero.
