    SUCH A COOL BOOK!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, this is probably the coolest book ever. I always wanted to know more about our military without any bias and this book does just that. I love how detailed the author is about every single group of forces.
What about Trevor Clingers performance did you like?
I liked how he had passion for our military forces. You can tell that by the way he narrates!
    This book was so cool!
My brother is in the military, and he really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It's so fascinating that there are so many special forces in our country. They are what keeps America on it's feet! Enjoyable listening!
worse thing I've ever listened to.
narrator reads like a retarded robot. no real insightful information, basic Wikipedia stuff.
i would not recommend anyone waste time or money on this awful production.

    Title: Blood Warriors
    Subtitle: American Military Elites
    Author: Michael Lee Lanning
    Narrator: L.J. Ganser
    Format: Abridged
Length: 2 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-15-16
    Publisher: Random House Audio
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
Rangers, Green Berets, SEALs, Delta Force, LRRPs, Force Recon - and the struggle of the best and the bravest to keep America free
They're some of the toughest and most highly trained fighting men in the world - going where no ordinary soldier would go and doing what no ordinary soldier would dare. Outnumbered and outgunned, operating in small teams of five- or six-deep in enemy territory far from help, they rely on their wits, their skills, and each other to get out alive.
Blood Warriors is a penetrating, no-holds-barred account of the training, missions, and history of the military elites who mold America's most dangerous and highly skilled warriors...from the Navy's SEALs and the Marine Corps' Force Reconnaissance to the US Army's Delta Force, Rangers, and Special Forces. Here's an in-depth look at each unit's methods and standards: what's required and what it takes to survive and succeed. Whether gathering intelligence, capturing prisoners, executing raids and ambushes, or just creating havoc in enemy territory, these men know that death is their constant companion - and one small misstep could mean body bags for everyone. Maybe that's why America calls them heroes.

    very good info
    great book
Not impressed and a letdown for this author
It's difficult to believe that this book was written by the same man who wrote the excellent (if a bit dry) books about the Vietnam era Recon Marines and LRRPs. I get the impression that the book was quickly written to take advantage of the recent interest in the special operations elites of the US militaries.
Firstly, there is nothing new here at all. The background of the units might be of interest for those who don't want to buy a book dedicated to the individual units. However, it is quite abbreviated. The coverage of the units in the current day is even worse, there is nothing in there that is not covered more completely and for free on the web at sites like specialoperations.com or what have you. In addition, several of the entries, most notably the Delta Force one, looks like all of the research was done by reading older books on the subject already out there. The old story of Delta Force's racism is brought up again, which has as its sole source a poorly written special operations overview by an Italian author whose title I won't dignify by repeating. The fact that people, including former black Delta Force members have denied this is not even mentioned. The fact that most special operations forces have low nmumbers of minorities is never mentioned, except in the SF section where it is carefully explained away socially.
This book may have some use if you know nothing about these units and would like a relatively cheap primer. However, there are vastly better books already out there so save your money. And that is my main complaint with the book. There are already better books out there that do the same overview of America's units. Douglass Waller's "The Commandos" and David Bohrer's "America's Special Forces" come to mind. In addition, it repeats myths as fact, seemingly taken out of older, innaccurate books. In short, it's a book that tries to do what other books have already done and it does it poorly.

  • Lift Audiobook by Daniel Kunitz

    Title: Lift
Subtitle: Fitness Culture, from Naked Greeks and Acrobats to Jazzercise and Ninja Warriors
    Author: Daniel Kunitz
    Narrator: Joe Towne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-06-16
    Publisher: Audiobooks.com Publishing
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 54 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
A fascinating cultural history of fitness, from Greek antiquity to the era of the "big-box gym" and beyond, exploring the ways in which human exercise has changed over time - and what we can learn from our ancestors.
We humans have been conditioning our bodies for more than 2,500 years, yet it's only recently that treadmills and weight machines have become the gold standard of fitness. For all this new technology, are we really healthier, stronger, and more flexible than our ancestors?
Where Born to Run began with an aching foot, Lift begins with a broken gym system - one founded on high-tech machinery and isolation techniques that aren't necessarily as productive as we think. Looking to the past for context, Daniel Kunitz crafts an insightful cultural history of the human drive for exercise, concluding that we need to get back to basics to be truly healthy.
Lift takes us on an enlightening tour through time, beginning with the ancient Greeks, who made a cult of the human body - the word gymnasium derives from the Greek word for "naked" - and following Roman legions, medieval knights, Persian pahlevans, and 18th-century German gymnasts. Kunitz discovers the seeds of the modern gym in 19th-century Paris, where weight-lifting machines were first employed, and takes us all the way up to the game-changer: the feminist movement of the 1960s, which popularized aerobics and calisthenics classes. This ignited the first true global fitness revolution, and Kunitz explores how it brought us to where we are today.
Once a fast-food inhaler and substance abuser, Kunitz reveals his own decade-long journey to becoming ultra-fit using ancient principals of strengthening and conditioning. With Lift, he argues that, as a culture, we are finally returning to this natural ideal - and that it's to our great benefit to do so.

    Get to Work
Would you consider the audio edition of Lift to be better than the print version?
I would. This is not a workout primer with exercise routines, rather it presents a narrative argument for changing your life based on nutrition and exercise.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Lift?
I enjoyed his analysis of Crossfit and Paleo eating. But some listeners might not. If you are an old school power lifter or bodybuilder you might be turned off by his interest in Crossfit. I understand that, having lifted for over 30 years. This book is aimed at someone who is either new to fitness or looking for a different approach. Just be aware of this and listen with an open mind.
Which character as performed by Joe Towne was your favorite?
This is really an autobiographic sketch by the author, so the best character was the author.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I thought it provided great info. You can be critical of anything if you want, but the functional fitness and back to basics nutrition presented by the author creates a compelling case. You may not want to join a Crossfit box but after you are done I think you will see the value in compound movements and functional exercise supported by a healthy diet.
    Any additional comments?
I recommend this for anyone who is interested in fitness.
    Educating yet Educational
I've never been a big history guy but as I matured I have enjoyed it more.

    Title: Heavens Ditch
Subtitle: God, Gold, and Murder on the Erie Canal
    Author: Jack Kelly
    Narrator: Andrew Reilly
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-05-16
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
"The Erie Canal rubbed Aladdin's lamp. America awoke, catching for the first time the wondrous vision of its own dimensions and power." - Francis Kimball, American architect
The technological marvel of its age, the Erie Canal grew out of a sudden fit of inspiration. Proponents didn't just dream; they built a 360-mile waterway entirely by hand and largely through wilderness. As excitement crackled down its length, the canal became the scene of the most striking outburst of imagination in American history. Zealots invented new religions and new modes of living. The Erie Canal made New York the financial capital of America and brought the modern world crashing into the frontier. Men and women saw God face-to-face, gained and lost fortunes, and reveled in a period of intense spiritual creativity.
Heaven's Ditch illuminates the spiritual and political upheavals along this "psychic highway", from its opening in 1825 through 1844. "Wage slave" Sam Patch became America's first celebrity daredevil. William Miller envisioned the apocalypse. Farm boy Joseph Smith gave birth to Mormonism, a new and distinctly American religion. Along the way, one encounters America's very first "crime of the century", a treasure hunt, searing acts of violence, a visionary cross-dresser, and a panoply of fanatics, mystics, and hoaxers. A pause-register narrative, Heaven's Ditch offers an excitingly fresh look at a heady, foundational moment in American history.
    Members Reviews:
An under told story of the United States.
If you could sum up Heavens Ditch in three words, what would they be?
    Religion, Politics, Violence.
What did you like best about this story?
The intertwining of the chapters between the canal's life and the American life during the first decades of the 1800's.
What about Andrew Reillys performance did you like?
He was very clear and his voice was pleasant to listen to.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
God, Gold And Murder - just as Mr. Kelly has subtitled the book.
    Any additional comments?
This was such a good, interesting book! It wove the early commercial, spiritual, and political happenings of the time into a very compelling story. That so many characters in American history bumped shoulders in the corridor of the Erie Canal and that what happened in roughly fifty years still affects us.
The beginnings of both the Mormon and Seventh Day Adventist Churches, of the abolitionist fervor that resulted in the founding of Oberlin College and the start of a political party that would eventually becoming the Republican party of Lincoln all took place or were influenced by this era. I will not spoil it, but the wife of a missing man from the early section of the book reappears later as an intimate of another major character - a twist not unlike that of a novel but one of complete truth. Jack Kelly shows in this book that history is always with us.

Length: 12 hrs and 16 mins

    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
From an award-winning journalist, a brave and necessary immersion into the everyday struggles of Palestinian life.
Over the past three years, American writer Ben Ehrenreich has been traveling to and living in the West Bank, staying with Palestinian families in its largest cities and its smallest villages. Along the way he has written major stories for American outlets, including a remarkable New York Times Magazine cover story. Now comes the powerful new work that has always been his ultimate goal, The Way to the Spring.
We are familiar with brave journalists who travel to bleak or war-torn places on a mission to listen and understand, to gather the stories of people suffering from extremes of oppression and want: Katherine Boo, Ryszard Kapuciski, Ted Conover, and Philip Gourevitch among them. Palestine is, by any measure, whatever one's politics, one such place. Ruled by the Israeli military, set upon and harassed constantly by Israeli settlers who admit unapologetically to wanting to drive them from the land, forced to negotiate an ever more elaborate and more suffocating series of fences, checkpoints, and barriers that have sundered home from field, home from home, this is a population whose living conditions are unique, and indeed hard to imagine.
In a great act of bravery, empathy and understanding, Ben Ehrenreich, by placing us in the footsteps of ordinary Palestinians and telling their story with surpassing literary power and grace, makes it impossible for us to turn away.

    Untold stories
A reminder of the reality in Palestine, resistance, divisions between two peoples, and a perspective and stories that are never talked about in this part of the world. Great read!!
Almost childish wide eyed report with no insight
Endless reporting with a gee wiz style that grates. I found no substance beyond seeing people hurting makes the author feel bad. From other write ups I expected something interesting but found endless repetition that added nothing to the record of the mideast
I wish everyone would read or listen to this
The author shows us the side of this conflict that is not covered in America, and the brave human beings who suffer tragically because of it.
    Amazing account.
Admittedly one-sided, but when it comes to this issue, all accounts are. Provides personal, actual, but also historical insight into the Palestine-Israeli conflict up until and after the Gaza war of 2014. Don't believe what they tell you on Fox news. Read this book for a different perspective.
    One-sided version of 'the truth'
I wanted to like this book, and don't completely disagree with the authors point of view, but the writing is so maddeningly one-sided that I gave up in frustration. If he just occasionally would have included some countervailing interviews, I might have been left with a less simplistic view of his thesis (Paletinians = good; Israelis = evil). This is not objective journalism despite the authors claim.

    Publisher's Summary:
Discover the Inspirational Life of This Unique American War Hero Today!
James Rorimer is no longer alive, but the contributions he made during his lifetime are still relevant in today's modern world. James was a very smart man, and he enjoyed his work very much because of the passion he had for the world's great works of art. Art was a subject that James had been studying since he was a small child and the knowledge he had accumulated over his life time would make him a perfect candidate to serve in a special unit during World War 2.
World War 2 was a very important event in James' life because of the enormous contribution he would make to minimize the damage that took place. James enlisted to fight in World War 2 and once his skill became apparent to the right people, he would be assigned to a unique roll that took him away from the conflict on the front lines. This assignment was with The Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Program that was created during World War 2 to save the valuable works of art and cultural monuments that were in danger of being stolen or destroyed.
Adolf Hitler had an evil plan to steal most of the world's valuable art work and place the pieces he liked on exhibit in his Nazi Museum. All the work that Hitler did not like would either be sold for profit or destroyed to make an example. Hitler believed that cultures monuments and works of art have the power to create patriotism die to the meanings and associations that become attached to them over time.
In 2013, George Clooney produced a movie about the Monuments Men so that he could tell their story. Even though there were over 300 Monuments Men, only a few of them had been featured in this film. The film focuses on the time during World War 2 when the Monuments Men arrived.

    Publisher's Summary:
One of the most significant works on our evolutionary ancestry since Richard Leakey's Origins, The First Signs is the first-ever exploration of the geometric images that accompany most cave art around the world - the first indications of symbolic meaning, intelligence, and language.
Imagine yourself as a caveman or cavewoman. The place: Europe. The time: 25,000 years ago, the last Ice Age. In reality you live in an open-air tent or a bone hut. But you also belong to a rich culture that creates art. In and around your cave paintings are handprints and dots, x's and triangles, parallel lines and spirals. Your people know what they mean. You also use them on tools and jewelry. And then you vanish - and with you, their meanings.
Join renowned archaeologist Genevieve von Petzinger on an Indiana Jones-worthy adventure from the open-air rock art sites of Northern Portugal to the dark depths of a remote cave in Spain that can be reached only by sliding face-first through the mud. Von Petzinger looks past the beautiful horses, powerful bison, graceful ibex, and faceless humans in the ancient paintings to the abstract geometric images that accompany them. These terse symbols appear more often than any other kinds of figures - signs that have never really been studied or explained until now.
Part travel journal, part popular science, part personal narrative, von Petzinger's groundbreaking book starts to crack the code on the first form of graphic communication. It's in her blood, as this talented scientist's grandmother served as a code breaker at Bletchley. Discernible patterns emerge that point to abstract thought and expression, and for the first time we can begin to understand the changes that might have been happening inside the minds of our Ice Age ancestors - offering a glimpse of when they became us.
