    Title: War, States, and Contention
    Subtitle: A Comparative Historical Study
    Author: Sidney Tarrow
    Narrator: Greg Tremblay
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-09-16
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
For the last two decades, Sidney Tarrow has explored "contentious politics" - disruptions of the settled political order caused by social movements. These disruptions range from strikes and street protests to riots and civil disobedience to revolution. In War, States, and Contention, Tarrow shows how such movements sometimes trigger, animate, and guide the course of war and how they sometimes rise during war and in war's wake to change regimes or even overthrow states.
In the 21st century, movements are becoming transnational, and globalization and internationalization are moving war beyond conflict between states. The radically new phenomenon is not that movements make war against states but that states make war against movements. Tarrow finds this an especially troublesome development in recent US history. He argues that that the United States is in danger of abandoning the devotion to rights it had expanded through two centuries of struggle and that Americans are now institutionalizing as a "new normal" the abuse of rights in the name of national security. He expands this hypothesis to the global level through what he calls "the international state of emergency."
    Critic Reviews:
"War, States, and Contention is a necessary book for any serious discussion of our global future." (John R. Hall, University of California, Davis)
"Sidney Tarrow breaks important new ground."(David Cole, Georgetown University Law Center)
"An intellectually ambitious and deeply passionate book that ranges widely across time and space. It is a remarkable book." (Ronald R. Krebs, University of Minnesota)

    Release date: 04-19-16
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 75 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
A groundbreaking examination of the greatest event in history, the Scientific Revolution, and how it came to change the way we understand ourselves and our world.
We live in a world transformed by scientific discovery. Yet today science and its practitioners have come under political attack. In this fascinating history spanning continents and centuries, historian David Wootton offers a lively defense of science, revealing why the Scientific Revolution was truly the greatest event in our history.
The Invention of Science goes back 500 years in time to chronicle this crucial transformation, exploring the factors that led to its birth and the people who made it happen. Wootton argues that the Scientific Revolution was actually five separate yet concurrent events that developed independently but came to intersect and create a new worldview. Here are the brilliant iconoclasts - Galileo, Copernicus, Brahe, Newton, and many more curious minds from across Europe - whose studies of the natural world challenged centuries of religious orthodoxy and ingrained superstition.
From gunpowder technology, the discovery of the new world, movable type printing, perspective painting, and the telescope to the practice of conducting experiments, the laws of nature, and the concept of the fact, Wootton shows how these discoveries codified into a social construct and a system of knowledge ideas of truth, knowledge, progress. Ultimately he makes clear the link between scientific discovery and the rise of industrialization - and the birth of the modern world we know.

    A Good Read Spoiled
I read the printed book shortly after it was released on trade paperback and was excited to see it on Audible.com a few months ago and put it on my list. That was a big mistake. After hearing 'Aristotlian' incorrectly as if it were two names, Aristotle Ian, I was forced to abandon it because it kept spiking my BP to levels dangerous for a man of my age and health. That is not the only horrendous mispronounciation, either. The title of the paradigm shifting Principia of Isaac Newton was equally disturbing to me. Perhaps I am a tad too sensitive about such things but I had to quit listening so as to increase the chances of me living at least long enough to purchase a new title.
New Postmodern Historiography of History o Science
Highly recommended textbook on Historiography of Scientific Thinking & Dialogue with Posmodern Turn in History.
    Mind Numbing
Grindingly pedantic, clangingly anglocentric, a PhD thesis written to be read by history grad students. Wooten is proud to display a wide and shallow understanding of actual scientific principles. Then compensates by counting words in ancient manuscripts like Antonin Scalia on a meth bender.
    Tedious, dryly academic
Would you try another book from David Wootton and/or James Langton?
I'd be very careful about trying another book from Wooton.
Has The Invention of Science turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I'm happy to read other history books on science.
What character would you cut from The Invention of Science?
The author. He's there too much, lecturing us on every detail.

The American Civil War, one of the most violent wars ever fought, started in reality in 1850, when the Compromise of 1850 deposed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and made "Popular Vote", by which the decision would be made, to designate a state free or slave. Kansas became the test, northerners and southerners both pour into the territory, voting to make that new state what either side preferred. Soon, bands of armed men rode through Kansas, some from the anti-slavery north, the Red Legs and Jayhawkers. Other bands, representing the pro-slavery point of view rode in from Missouri, these border ruffians, soon to become known as bushwhackers, like the red legs, killed and burned out people with an opposite point of view or loyalty.

Dear Folks: Long-Lost Letters from a World War II Officer
    : R.A. Schwartzman
This collection of letters from the 40's and 50's reminded me of communication between family when I was a child. Letter writing was a true art form that has been lost in this age of instant communication. This is an excellent way to spend an afternoon.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.

Just right: heard as audio book
I I heard as audiobook and it was quite interesting. It was a good complement to an hour video documentary on Battle of Nirmandy I found on YouTube
    Must-read for WWII history buffs
Horrific invasion losses on the June 6, 1944 Normandy beaches but without the allied trickery, deception, Hitler's ago, foul weather and superb planning... the outcome would have been disastrous. Book is well researched and told in fascinating style.

    Release date: 10-08-15
    Publisher: Quercus
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
The Nazi Hunters is the incredible, hitherto untold story of the most secret chapter in the SAS' history. Officially, the world's most elite special forces unit was dissolved at the end of the Second World War and not reactivated until the 1950s.
Among their last actions was a disastrous commando raid into occupied France in 1944, which ended in the capture, torture and execution of 31 soldiers. It can now be revealed that the SAS never was dissolved: it lived on, commanded personally by Churchill and hidden even from the British government.
They were tasked with hunting through the ruins of the Reich for the SS commanders responsible for the murder of their comrades, including many who had escaped the failed justice of the Nuremberg trials. Along the way they discovered before anyone else the full horror of Hitler's regime and the growing threat from Stalin's Russia.
Still studied by the SAS today and a central part of their founding myth, the story of the Nazi hunters is now told by best-selling author Damien Lewis.
