From that point forward, the race was on for those who aspired to climb Mount Everest, and several of these men have gone down in history, not just for their accomplishments but for their controversies. One of the earliest and most famous mountaineers to begin climbing Everest was George Mallory, who made several expeditions in the early 1920s in an attempt to reach the summit. While there is still a lingering debate over whether he actually succeeded in 1924, the goal of being the first documented individual to reach the peak continued until Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Everest in 1953.

Naturally, even after that, people have continued to take on one of the most extreme challenges the world has to offer. In fact, climbing Mount Everest has become enough of a business that even those with no climbing experience can pay to make an attempt to summit with experienced guides. Given how treacherous the climb is, this has been frequently criticized (including by Hillary himself), and as recently as April 2014, 16 Sherpa guides were killed on the mountain by an avalanche, but interest in Everest remains as high as ever.

Fills in the history of climbing Mt. Everest

Most of us are familiar with the climbing of Mt. Everest. This short volume provides much additional detail on the earlier and later attempts at Everest as well as Hillary's life both before and after the climb. As with most Charles River Editions, it comes with a bibliography and references. A recommended short read.

Great read.

The book is filled with the courageous and adventurous. Beautiful photos of Everest. How folksy Hillary was! I really enjoyed this book.

Be aware that this book only addresses summit attempts that occurred prior to the Hillary summit There are other books that sufficiently cover this topic.

Climbing in high altitude, on ice and high wind is very difficult, because of the altitude sickness.

an entertaining "light read"

Having read a number of the "umteen" books concerening Mt. Everest, I'd say this is as good a one to start with as any. My personal favorite to date however is Jon Krakauer's INTO THIN AIR. This mountain is sacred to the local people.

A great book.

This is an outstanding book. It is well written and very readable and provides fascinating first person accounts of experiences during war time service. I have lived in Scituate, Massachusetts since 1980 and thus was delighted to see the contributions to this book from several friends and neighbors.

Very interesting and powerful interviews with 65 different men and women who were in the military service in the USA. All of the veterans interviewed for this book are from a small rural area in Massachusetts. I found this book to be a very intriguing and easy read. In reading this book I acquired a much better understanding of what our veterans have gone through during the multitude of wars that America has been involved in over the years. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in the military and our military history in America.

A Gifted Tribute to Those Who Gave So Much!

In his captivating book, Mr. Wheatley depicts legacies of military service even back to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. He portrays the essence of veteran experiences (both men and women) more personally and poignantly than block buster movies. What a gift to the veterans, their families, fellow Americans, and future generations he has bestowed. He has captured their sacrifices, patriotism, tenacity, and heroism that otherwise would have be en regrettably lost in time. The earliest oil drilled oil wells were found in the Sichuan Province of China in 347 CE. These primitive wells ran up to 800-ft deep, and were dug up by a manual rig still used in rural areas today. The apparatus was made of sturdy pipe bamboo and a sharp iron drill attached to it. A group of two or more men operated the machine. Some stood on the wooden lever, which activated the pulley system. The machine hoisted the drill stem off the ground and back into the ground repeatedly, slowly breaking through the earth.

I thought this was supposed to be a comprehensive book about the history of Singapore. It's 5 pages long. False advertising.
