Founded by the brilliant plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe, this is probably the most exclusive club in the world, and one no one would want to join given the chance. McIndoe directed operations, re-constructing his patients and inspired them to rebuild their own lives. The spirit of the Guinea Pigs, over 600 brave young men who weren't defeated, but rose again to victory, has lived on for 60 years, and this is the remarkable story of those heroic men and the vital battles they fought, both in the air and on the ground.

    Title: Curiosity
    Author: Alberto Manguel
    Narrator: John McDonough
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-28-15
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Alberto Manguel's The History of Reading was an international best seller translated into 34 languages and for which Manguel earned the Medicis Prize. Fourteen years later Manguel anchors his new book in the primal connection between reading and curiosity.
Tracing 25 centuries of human history, from the fourth century BC to the present day, Manguel dedicates each of his chapters to a single character - ranging from our best-known thinkers, scientists, and artists to seemingly minor figures of whom we know little more than one inspired utterance - in whom he identifies a particular way of asking the question "why?" Above all he aims to "awake in readers a consciousness of their own powers of enquiry and imagination, of their right to doubt and contest assumed answers, and of their responsibility in furthering the questions our ancestors were asking far away and long ago".

    Great
    Terrific book.Very astute.

A truly wonderful exploration of western civilization values that Alberto Manguel revisits through Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.
    Five Stars
Knowledge acquirement through the centuries before your eyes!!!
good read slowly savor every bite
lovely book well written glad I purchased it
    Curioser and Curioser
This is an odd book. Ostensibly about curiosity, Manguel uses this concept as a springboard for whatever takes his fancy, presumably organized by themes that make the title of each of the chapters.
On top of this nominal framework, the whole enterprise is diffused through the prism of Dante's Commedia. Why? Apparently Manguel becomes obsessed with various books at different points in his life, and discovering the riches of Dante later in life, he is currently immersed thinking through that great work, and by extension, so are we.
His tangents are often fascinating, sometimes less so, often seemingly tethered by the merest thread to the topic on hand. A chapter on the representation of thought by writing veers off into the Inca way of representing thought by a series of knots organized by shape and color known as quipu. A chapter on How Do We Question concentrates on various medieval commentators on the Talmud.
This book doesn't rigorously explore the concept of curiosity so much as embody its workings in the author. The reader travels along with him on his intellectual and often literary explorations, sometimes leading to open vistas, sometimes down a cul-de-sac. This is a frequently enlightening, usually entertaining journey, so long as there isn't any place you are in a hurry to get to.
N.B. I've been assured no cats were killed in the writing of this book.

I not only learned alot of history reading this book, but it was very entertaining at the same time. The author uses a somewhat "relaxed" first-person voice, which gives it a very personal feel. What I also enjoyed about this book is that the reader is given a good feel about some of the things that the soldier's family and community is going through while all of these men are at war. This would be such a good book for middle school and high school students to learn about World War Two almost "first-hand' and in a thoroughly interesting way!

This book gives an excellent picture of what went on in the life of an army runner in WWII. From the beginning to the end, the author has a way of drawing the reader in to the midst of the event, the excitement, and the drama of the war, as well as the moments of joy with family. You will feel like you are right there, on the battlefield, in the barracks, etc.
If you are interested in history and want a picture of what the war was like, this book is for you! A must read!
A plus, for content; highly recommended.
Good book; the writer isn't the greatest, but the details in the book are brutally honest. I read another book similar to this, in that the author is describing the earlier life of the man he's writing about in this book, and that one was just as good.
Together they form an excellent picture of life during and immediately after the Great Depression and how the war affected ordinary people.
    Good read!
A truly enjoyable book about WWII from the perspective of a real soldier. I was intrigued by the accounts of the time in Europe - as I had traveled to several of the places mentioned. Good read!
You'll feel like you were there!
Beautifully written novel recounting experiences of war, love and loyalty to family, and eternal questions about life and death in a time of conflict. A must read!

  • The History and Folklore of Vampires Audiobook by Charles River Editors

Title: The History and Folklore of Vampires
Subtitle: The Stories and Legends Behind the Mythical Beings
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Jack Chekijian

Length: 1 hr and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-01-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 24 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
People have always been afraid of the dead. Since the dawn of humanity, people have both cared for those who are deceased yet also tried to keep them away. There are a myriad of legends and beliefs about the dead coming back, and one of the more persistent ones is of the vampire.
Everyone has heard of vampires, but few people are truly familiar with the history and folklore that have made the mythical beings so popular. Indeed, there are so many legends from so many cultures that it is difficult to come up with a hard definition. And folklore is by its very nature unscientific, but most people in the Western world think of vampires as those who come back from the grave to suck the blood or life essence from the living.
This common understanding of vampires actually obscures many European and most non-European traditions of bloodsucking monsters. For example, in China, Japan, and the Middle East, there are spirits that will drain the life force of an unwary person, but these magical beings were never mortal humans. In African and Native American traditions, there are monsters that do the same, but while they are supposed to be of this Earth, they, too, are not human beings.
Furthermore, folklore changes over time, so the vampires people are familiar with today (and the ones some people claim to actually meet) bear little resemblance to the vampires of early modern Europe. Stories change, fiction turns to fact and vice versa, and beliefs are constantly reinvented. Ideas are adopted, adapted, and presented as true. All the while the legend of the vampire remains.
The History and Folklore of Vampires chronicles how vampires became so popular.

Vampires from Medieval times to the present
In less than an hour and a half we reap the benefits of someone else's hard work of digging through historical accounts and assembling into a comprehensible text. Information presented not only of the standard European fare, but of similar undead from around the globe. European depictions evolve from the oral folklore to 20th century movies, to a 2012 publicity venture.
JC has the voice quality, intonation, and fluidity to keep it entertaining as well as instructional. Much better in his narration than the scholarly thesis that it is.
    Vampire Folklore for Dummies
Would you listen to The History and Folklore of Vampires again? Why?
I would. I learned a few things I didnt know, but like any good book reading/listening to it again you always pick things up that you missed the first time.
Have you listened to any of Jack Chekijians other performances before? How does this one compare?
Ive listened to a few of Jack's books. He does well in all of the books.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Moved? No, but there were a few things items that I didn't know and a few things that set the record straight.
    Any additional comments?

    Informative and fun!
In this informational book, Charles River Editors looks at the history of vampiric folklore world wide, with a strong focus on Europe. The vampires of modern literature and cinema are not the vampires of the ancient past. Indeed, those beings that have been called vampire often bear little resemblance to Bran Stokers version.

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-24-15
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
Two leading experts on violent extremism explain the genesis, evolution, and implications of today's most barbaric jihadist army, Islamic State.
Drawing on their unusual access to intelligence sources and material, law enforcement, and groundbreaking research into open-source intelligence, Stern and Berger outline the origins of ISIS as the formidable terrorist group it has quickly become.
ISIS: The State of Terror delves into the ghoulish pornography' of pro-jihadi videos, the seductive appeal of jihadi chic' and the startling effectiveness of the Islamic State's use of social media as a means of luring and recruiting citizens from countries such as the United States, Great Britain, and France - using recent examples such as Douglas McCain, the American citizen from Minnesota who joined ISIS and died in combat fighting on the side of the Islamic State.
Although the picture Stern and Berger paint is bleak, ISIS: The State of Terror also offers well-informed thoughts on potential government responses to ISIS - most importantly, emphasizing that we must alter our present conceptions of terrorism and react to the rapidly changing jihadi landscape, both online and off, as quickly as the terrorists do.
ISIS The State of Terror is not only a compelling account of the evolution of a terrorist organization but also a necessary book that attempts to answer the question of what our next move, as a country, as a government, as the world, should be.
    Critic Reviews:
"A timely warning from an expert who has not lost his perspective." (New York Times)
    "Timely and compelling" (Booklist)
    "[A] stunningly brave book." (Elle)
    Members Reviews:
    Stunning insight
Would you listen to ISIS: The State of Terror again? Why?
Superb text on a current and developing historical issue. Detailing various topics within the IS (ISIS) paradox, the book outlines clearly and without distortion the past and current background of IS, its beginnings, it ideology, its methods, and its complex interaction within the Middle East conflicts and Non-conformant enemies. Many current events and their expanded details explained, illustrating how IS became a world problem, not just a local issue.
What did you like best about this story?
That it explains the reasons why people engage in such activities, and the ways and means the IS has risen to the "ideological body" it is today. A prelude to future books on the subject, it will no doubt become common to most bookshelves of readers.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The stories of the personalities of IS, and their backgrounds on how they got where they did or are in the current IS hierarchy.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The moving stories of the victims of IS atrocities!
The failed political correct analysis of yesterday
A far too political correct presentation, failing to see the harsh realities concerning the nature of the beast.
    Balanced
A balanced and instructive approach that even suggests practical and purposeful solutions, a grown up view
Interesting but still more background needed
Interesting but still more background needed. So why the hate, why the beliefs that all religions and versions of or seen so bad, why the ease to kill.

    Title: Phantom Terror
Subtitle: Political Paranoia and the Creation of the Modern State, 1789 - 1848
    Author: Adam Zamoyski
    Narrator: Gildart Jackson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 22 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-10-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 56 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
For the ruling and propertied classes of the late eighteenth century, the years following the French Revolution were characterized by intense anxiety. Monarchs and their courtiers lived in constant fear of rebellion, convinced that their power--and their heads--were at risk. Driven by paranoia, they chose to fight back against every threat and insurgency, whether real or merely perceived, repressing their populaces through surveillance networks and violent, secretive police action. Europe and the world had entered a new era.
In Phantom Terror, award-winning historian Adam Zamoyski argues that the stringent measures designed to prevent unrest had disastrous and far-reaching consequences, inciting the very rebellions they had hoped to quash. The newly established culture of state control halted economic development in Austria and birthed a rebellious youth culture in Russia that would require even harsher methods to suppress. By the end of the era, the first stirrings of terrorist movements had become evident across the continent, making the previously unfounded fears of European monarchs a reality.
Phantom Terror explores this troubled, fascinating period, when politicians and cultural leaders from Edmund Burke to Mary Shelley were forced to choose sides and either support or resist the counterrevolutionary spirit embodied in the newly omnipotent central states. The turbulent political situation that coalesced during this era would lead directly to the revolutions of 1848 and to the collapse of order in World War I. We still live with the legacy of this era of paranoia, which prefigured not only the modern totalitarian state but also the now preeminent contest between society's haves and have-nots.
These tempestuous years of suspicion and suppression were the crux upon which the rest of European history would turn. In this magisterial history, Zamoyski chronicles the moment when desperate monarchs took the world down the path of revolution, terror, and world war.
    Members Reviews:
    Amazing
If you are interested in political developments in Europe during the period covered from the perspective within Culture and the minds and words of that time this book is utterly essential.
Narration by Gildart Jackson is certainly a great service to the book itself and intensely stimulating to the brain!
The hearing sense is far more precise and nuanced than reading by eye can ever be.
    Ear-popping package!
    Wonderful book, exceeds all expectation
Every now and then a book comes along that sheds light on much that had been familiar yet unfocused, thereby bringing a new and exhilarating understanding to a wide range of subjects. Phantom Terror is just such a book. It is invaluable for everyone interested in 19th century history, literature and culture, or in history in general.
Gildart Jackson is excellent (despite mispronunciations of foreign words, though it should be said that he generally has a fair idea of how words in French and German sound; French names can indeed be difficult to get right unless one happens to know or does the research).
    Highly recommended.
Most regrettably, this book appears to be unavailable to Canadian and European customers.

    Title: Finding Zero
Subtitle: A Mathemetician's Odyssey to Uncover the Origins of Numbers
    Author: Amir D. Aczel
    Narrator: Stefan Rudnicki
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 32 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
The story of how we got our numbers - told through one mathematician's journey to find zero.
The invention of numerals is perhaps the greatest abstraction the human mind has ever created. Virtually everything in our lives is digital, numerical, or quantified. The story of how and where we got these numerals, which we so depend on, has for thousands of years been shrouded in mystery. Finding Zero is an adventure-filled saga of Amir Aczel's lifelong obsession: to find the original sources of our numerals. Aczel has doggedly crisscrossed the ancient world, scouring dusty, moldy texts, cross examining so-called scholars who offered wildly differing sets of facts, and ultimately penetrating deep into a Cambodian jungle to find a definitive proof. Here, he takes the listener along for the ride.
The history begins with the early Babylonian cuneiform numbers, followed by the later Greek and Roman letter numerals. Then Aczel asks the key question: Where do the numbers we use today, the so-called Hindu-Arabic numerals, come from? It is this search that leads him to explore uncharted territory, to go on a grand quest into India, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and ultimately into the wilds of Cambodia. There he is blown away to find the earliest zero - the keystone of our entire system of numbers - on a crumbling, vine-covered wall of a seventh-century temple adorned with eaten-away erotic sculptures. While on this odyssey, Aczel meets a host of fascinating characters: academics in search of truth, jungle trekkers looking for adventure, surprisingly honest politicians, shameless smugglers, and treacherous archaeological thieves - who finally reveal where our numbers come from.

Not what I expected but I loved it just the same.
The personal journey of this author is by itself quite interesting and the added bonus of all the mathematical insights as well as the historical discovery make for some of the best reading a number junkie like myself could ever ask for. I recommend all of Mr. Aczel's books whether you are a Math hound or not.
    Couldn't stop listening
My first audible book that I couldn't stop listening to. Enjoyable start to finish. I would love to meet the author and shake his hand in seeing his vision through. I hope to see k127 for myself someday.
Not bad for an evolutionists take...
Fairly interesting, but leans heavily upon the dates and historical periods per the theory of evolution. I am not a proponent of said theory, and would be most enthusiastic if somebody would venture a work on this subject from the creationist point of view. As such, I can only regard this as a mere work of entertainment with a factual account of a true story, but historically, it is nearly valueless to creationists.
Lost me with all the sex talk...
Would you try another book from Amir D. Aczel and/or Stefan Rudnicki?
I'd be hesitant to. I'm not sure I would.
What was most disappointing about Amir D. Aczels story?
While it started out as an interesting personal narrative concerning math, it descended into talk about these statues and carvings which were in sexual positions, sexually aroused, naked, etc. It just became all about sex. I lost interest. I wanted to listen to a book about math, not depictions of sex and arousal.
Which character as performed by Stefan Rudnicki was your favorite?
I didn't get far enough in to say.
