Today we’re going over the evolution of the early rules of American football, and how it came to distinguish itself completely from its immediate ancestor, early rugby. The two main things are the line of scrimmage as an innovation on the scrum, and the legalization of blocking, which is something that could not be more illegal in other forms of football around the world.

Basically, all major changes that occurred before the advent of the forward pass.

We'll touch on the lost titan Sewanee--probably most famous today as a quirk in Alabama's fight song--as well as the first meeting between the Auburn Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs in 1892. We'll also introduce football in the HBCUs, in anticipation of a more in-depth look at them later.
