Publisher's Summary:
There is conflict in the whanau. The young man Te Rua holds a secret for life, the one to die with. But he realises that if he is to acknowledge and claim his daughter, the secret will have to be told. The Sisters are threatening to drag the whanau through the courts. But why? What is really going on?
Meanwhile, wider events are encroaching. Visitors will arrive in numbers to this East Coast site, wanting to be among the first in the world to see the new millennium. There are plans to be put into action, there's money to be made, and there's high drama as the millennium turns. Like Potiki before it, Dogside Story is set in a rural Maori coastal community. The power of the land and the strength of the whanau are life-preserving forces. This rich and vivid novel, threaded with humour, presents a powerful picture of Maori in modern times.

Over my head
For somebody who knows a bit about Maori culture, this would probably be a great book. However, I didn't understand enough to follow the plot or language, despite really wanting to learn about the culture and New Zealand in general. Sadly, I gave up reading...
This is a great book!
I read this in Anthropology class in college and I think this is one of the best books I've ever read!
New Zealand's National Treasure
This is my favorite of Grace's novels - the first in which (I feel) her elegant writing style is fully developed. Grace writes in deceptively simple and ordinary language. However what she achieves (she admits by writing slowly and constantly reworking) is actually a rich tapestry interweaving story, deep Maori earth connectedness, myth and the public and inner aspect of characters that are so universal readers from any culture will recognize them. Although her story concerns a Maori intertribal dispute, she approaches character development from a sophisticated 21st century perspective - emphasizing both their human frailties and the psychological underpinnings that motivate them.
If you like Barbara Kingsolver and Carson McCullers, you will love Patria Grace.
A real joy to read.
