Definition and criteria of iman.

Iman is belief.

Faith and belief resides in three places; the heart, the tongue and action.

The proof of iman is in action. Prayer on time, reading Qur’an etc.

What increases iman?

Iman increases with every good deed that you do. It decreases with every bad deed, sin, or disobedience.

Three types of hearts

Peaceful

Ill or sick heart

Dead heart

Taqwa

Taqwa has a link with imaan and the heart. Taqwa is in the heart. When the heart becomes strong it attains taqwa.

Taqwa is to fear the almighty. Taqwa is to order to orders and commandments of Allah and his messenger. It becomes easy to do this. To avoid disobeying Allah.

Gratitude to Allah

Gratitude is to use the blessing that Allah gave us to become closer to Allah. Wealth, children. Even attributes.

Imaan is linked with actions

Which actions should we perform?

1. Salat. Pray on time in congregation.

2. Athkar

3. Read Quran. Read it every day. It will put nur (light) in your heart. It will raise your status. If your heart is pure then you would never be far from the Quran. You would love to read it. Read it, contemplate it. In every letter you recite is a hasanat. Recite some every day.

4. Have good companions. This will increase your iman. Their good manners will influence you. Make Dawah.

5. Secret good deeds. Fast every Monday and Thursday. Go to a muslim graveyard and contemplate mortality. Visit people in the hospital. Give sadaqah (charity) in private.

6. Sadaqah give charity. If you sin then follow it with a good deed like sadaqah.

Sins destroy you. Sins destroy the heart, the character etc..

Sins make you unhappy. Happiness comes when Allah is happy with you. When Allah is unhappy with you, you will be unhappy. When the heart is soft, you are upon nur (light) guidance atc. Sins will make your heart tight and hard.

Allah will guide the guided. Do more good deeds and Allah will guide you even further.

The basic principle to gaining Iman is to perform as many good deeds as possible and avoid bad deeds as much as possible. If you commit sins they do tawba (repetance) right away.

He who utters ten times:

La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahulmulku wa lahulhamdu, wa Huwa `ala kulli sha’in qadir

(There is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner. His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),

he will have a reward equal to that for freeing four slaves from the progeny of Prophet Isma`il. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

“There are two statements that are light on the tongue, heavy on the scales, and beloved to the Most Merciful:

Subahana Allahi wa bihamdih

Subhana Allahi Al-`Azeem

(Glory and praise be to Allah,

Glorified is Allah, the Most Great.)” (Al-Bukhari)
