What would you do if the world declared you guilty for a crime you did not commit?

At just seventeen years old, Alphonso James was arrested in Milwaukee and accused of a murder he knew nothing about. Functionally illiterate and frightened, he trusted the authority around him and signed documents he could not read. Within months, he was sentenced to 100 years in prison.

What followed could have hardened any heart.

Instead, it revealed one.

Inside the walls of Green Bay Correctional Institution, Alphonso faced despair, anger, violence, and isolation. During his first years in prison he fought the system, the environment, and even himself. But everything began to change when a persistent prison chaplain refused to give up on him. Week after week, even when Alphonso met him with hatred and humiliation, the chaplain returned with compassion.

Eventually he brought a simple children's coloring book.

It became the beginning of a transformation.

Through those pages Alphonso learned to read. Through scripture he discovered purpose. Through suffering he discovered forgiveness. And through hope he discovered the calling on his life.

For thirty two years he held onto a quiet belief that one day the truth would emerge. Every morning he folded his bedding and packed his belongings as if he were leaving prison that very day. Guards laughed and told him to accept his life sentence.

But Alphonso never settled into captivity.

In 2017, after decades of persistence and intervention from the Wisconsin Innocence Project, Alphonso was finally released. The system acknowledged the injustice, and he walked out of prison carrying both freedom and a mission.

Today Alphonso speaks across communities sharing a message few people could deliver with such authenticity. He speaks about forgiveness, faith, second chances, and the power of hope that refuses to die. His vision now is to create healing spaces for people returning from incarceration, places where families can reconnect, trauma can be transformed, and lives can begin again.

What would you do if you were one minute away from losing your arm, and possibly your purpose?

On a narrow road in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, a flash of blinding light changed Mark Burnett’s life forever. His car flipped. His right arm was nearly torn from his body, held on by skin. In shock, in pain, and left unattended for nearly 24 hours, Mark faced a devastating reality. Doctors shook their heads. Amputation seemed inevitable.

What happens when a single moment changes everything?

On a September night in Texas, a 19 year old college sophomore ran out of gas. There was no shoulder on the road. A car traveling 60 miles an hour struck him. In seconds, Chad Williamson lost his right leg. In the months that followed, he endured 21 surgeries, relentless physical pain, and a future that looked nothing like the one he had imagined.

But the deepest wounds were invisible.

Beneath the prosthetic fittings and hospital visits, depression quietly took hold. Pain medication became dependency. Dependency became heroin. What if your greatest victory had nothing to do with the scoreboard?

Lou Vickery stood on the mound in the bottom of the ninth. Two outs. Bases loaded. One pitch. A hanging curveball sailed into the night for a grand slam. Game over.

At two in the morning, he was walking the streets replaying that pitch in his mind when a police officer stopped him and gave him a lesson he would carry for life: In your business and in mine, you better have a good forgettery.

That moment shaped a mindset that would carry Lou through five careers, a devastating shoulder injury, a stock market collapse, a plane crash, tornadoes, hurricanes, and even COVID with double pneumonia at 80 years old. Doctors told his family he would not make it. Twenty two days later, he walked out of the hospital believing God had given him another assignment.

Lou is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played at Fenway Park and later built careers in finance, professional speaking, radio, television, and authorship. He has written 21 books, each one born from lived experience rather than ego.
