Mergime Kajtazi was born and raised in Kosovo (a small country in south-east Europe). Ms. Kajtazi holds a Bachelor of Law from University of Prishtina in Kosovo where she worked as a researcher in the Kosovo Democratic Institute.
She fell in love with someone who had been raised in the United States. He painted a fairy tale picture of the opportunities that awaited them once they married and both moved to the states together. Like so many young, hopeful, and in love people do - she made the leap. She came to realize that she was vulnerable and isolated from all of her support in a new country. The fairy tale crumbled into a nightmare of fear, abuse, and domestic violence.
As she matured, she became a woman who could not only stand up to her abuser …but also file a restraining order and eventually divorce his ass. She turned her struggle into a purpose. Maggie graduated from Benjamin Cardozo School of Law with a Master of Law Degree in June 2020 and subsequently passed the New York Bar Exam.
She now appears on multiple media venues to encourage other people to speak up against domestic violence. Life hasn’t been a fairy tale, but now she’s the one writing her own story.
