I read a statement the other day claiming less is more with NPTE preparation. The advice suggested that when preparing for the boards, you should only use two reference textbooks. 

We use the saying, "less is more," all of the time, however, that line of thinking is not always appropriate. One of the reasons students fail the NPTE is because their knowledge is superficial. 

When a student only relies on one source of information, it forces them to settle for just the knowledge contained in those references. Unfortunately, I have years of proof supporting that for many students a review textbook is not enough.

So what is the alternative? I will explain this further in the episode.

The absolute worst part of the testing experience is the waiting period for your results. I mean why do they really have to make you wait entire 6-7 days!! Complete torture to be honest.

That week of waiting is filled with anxiety, stress, poor eating habits, and the lack of anything filling your mind but the possibility of failing. Not to mention your family and friends who keep asking about whether you passed or not!

Okay, how do I know that? Yup, I have been there with you, struggling with that constant feeling of uncertainty.

But, luckily for me, I was able to curb my stress after a couple days by implementing 4 key strategies.

Over the past four years, I have found that it is easy to get caught up in the trap of recognizing topics and not truly understanding them...

There have been hundreds of times where I've just skimmed a page and "thought I knew" the topics, only to get questions about those topics wrong.

I never truly understood why this happens until I discovered, "the difference between recognition and recollection".

Have you ever been pressured to do something that you didn’t feel comfortable with? I know that I have… I have been pressured to smoke, drink underage, and a bunch of other stuff with negative consequences.

I found out that there is another type of peer/familial pressure that is not based around doing something considered harmful, unethical, or illegal. This kind of pressure catches you off guard. Peer/familial pressure regarding the NPTE makes you uncomfortable, and depending on your choices, can have consequences that can make you feel worse than you've ever felt.

Let's go over the 2018 NPTE changes.

So now you are in a position, just like me and several others, who have taken a standardized exam and now the test creators are changing the test format.

These changes wouldn’t be so scary if there weren't social media commentary hyping up the idea. I want to shed some light on this so-called "different exam."

Most of all, I want to explain why these changes could cause you not to get the 600.

The first piece of advice that I always tell my students is, "Make sure that you are asking the why questions and not just taking information off of face value." We do that too often.

One of my most favorite topics. Confidence has such a big impact on tests scores. You already know that I come from a background where I wasn’t very confident. 

A background where I felt like I was the worst test taker out there. The person that you know just didn’t have it. Just wasn’t good enough. Just didn’t study hard enough. Whatever it was, I was not good at test taking. And the one thing that I will say is that I felt like I was always out on an island by myself.

 

I felt that everyone else had whatever it took to do well on the SAT’, the ACT’s, the MCAT, NPTE, whatever it was. 

 

They had it. I didn’t.
