The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P500, and Nasdaq are the three primary indices where stocks are traded, and understanding their various components and weightings can give us a better understanding of how and why they move. Nathan takes us through the mechanics of the big three stock indices. Also on MoneyTalk, how to choose your approach to investing, and the history of interest rate policy in the developed world.
Target Outcome ETFs® (the “funds”) are actively managed exchange-traded funds (“ETFs”) that are designed to help equity investors maintain a level of protection in down markets, while taking advantage of growth opportunities in up markets. The funds seek to provide targeted market exposure to equity ETFs that are based on market indexes such as the S&P 500 index, while providing a defined downside buffer level, over a specified Target Outcome Period, which removes some of the uncertainty associated with equity investing. Losses can have a greater impact on investments than gains because the money remaining after the loss must work harder to get back to its original level. The math of
percentages shows that as losses get larger, the return necessary to recover to the break-even point increases at a much faster rate. A loss of 10% necessitates an 11% gain to recover. Increase that loss to 25%, and it takes a 33% gain to get back to break-even. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain to get back to where the investment value started. Target Outcome ETFs® may encourage investors to stay invested by providing a defined buffer against potential losses. Traditionally, investment strategies that offer specific payoff profiles have been offered through structured products, typically issued by banks or other financial institutions. The funds offer a way to gain access to outcome-based investing—specifically to buffer against a level of downside risk while allowing growth to a maximum cap—eliminating bank credit risk, in a convenient, flexible investment vehicle.

The reverse mortgage earned a stigma during its early years as under-regulated brokers pushed them on the public as a universal solution for lifetime retirement income, but the product does offer some real benefits to individuals under the right circumstances. Donna and Nathan discuss how the reverse mortgage works, who it may be right for, and what features applicants need to understand before considering one. Also on MoneyTalk, how mutual fund manager Ron Baron’s approach to corporate analysis has carried his fund’s performance for decades.
