She is a songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist, a sonic explorer — and someone whose life story almost feels like the indie rock version of Forrest Gump. Somehow, someway, Azalia has crossed paths with everyone from Beck during the explosion of the lo-fi movement to the legendary Dick Van Dyke — collecting stories that sound too magical to be real.

Andy takes us behind the scenes of the album’s creation, sharing incredible stories about recording the entire project on tape, the experimental spirit surrounding the sessions, and the bizarre, beautiful world of the album’s many invented characters. We talk about the record’s constant musical zig zags, its fearless creativity, and why Coquelicot remains one of the most adventurous and unique albums to come out of the Elephant 6 universe.

We also learn the hilarious story of how Andy first joined Of Montreal, along with reflections on the collaborative magic of that era and what made those recordings feel so alive and unpredictable.

DBWS 2-17 Devine and Devine and Rishis

In this one, we’re diving into two mini classic episodes from our first season that still feel as alive and necessary now as they did then. First up is Chris McKay’s Devine and Devine — a record born out of the kind of circumstance that reshapes everything. Faced with his own mortality, Chris didn’t just write songs, he tore up the rulebook and created in a way that feels raw, immediate, and a little bit confrontational. It’s intimate in a way that might make you uncomfortable at times, but that’s the point. You can hear the weight of it, but also the clarity. It’s not just an album, it’s a document of someone pushing through, finding a way to make something beautiful while staring down the hardest truth there is.

From there, we reconnect with several members of The Rishis, where the conversation keeps circling back to one thing above all else: community. Not just the idea of it, but the lived-in, built-over-time kind that has always defined the Elephant 6 Collective. There’s a real emphasis on showing up for each other, sharing ideas freely, and creating in a way that feels connected rather than isolated. Coming out of the pandemic, that sense of togetherness feels even more intentional — like the music isn’t just about new records, but about keeping the spirit of collaboration and friendship alive, no matter what the world throws at it.

Per usual, we try to stick to the records… but you know how that goes. Conversations drift, stories unfold, and before long we’re deep in the weeds talking about creativity, community, and why this whole weird, wonderful scene still matters so much.
