"All color drained from my face as I was greeted with the sight of the eight foot tall beast standing before me on its hind legs. Twenty Nines head was cocked sideways with one eye focused on me. Its pupil seemed to grow and shrink rapidly as it scanned over my entire body. Its lower jaw slowly moved up and down as it began to vocalize again. "
“'Don’t you worry, Snapper,' she whispers and wipes her nose. Her face is expressionless. “Now I know how we’ll get you something to
"Hovering about fifty feet above me was the Owl Man. With a wingspan of over twelve feet, far larger than any of the Great Horned Owls that inhabited the mountains, he blocked out most of the moon. His head was that of an owl, his body human-like, although covered with dark feathers, with sharp talons that reflected the moonlight. As he looked down on me with two large orange eyes, I turned over, convinced I was having a nightmare."

"There was nothing reflected in the mirror, none of Nolan's room, or of him, or of me. The entire frame was filled with a mass of what looked like black, oily eggs, each of them glistening and emitting an aurora of shifting, dancing color that seeped out, through the glass and over the mantle where it poured down to the grate in a wave. I knew what I was looking at—I'd seen it before. It was a gateway, a portal to elsewhere, elsewhen."

“She pulled away, and I ached for the return of her mouth. When it did not return, I opened my eyes to the dark, fumbled for my flashlight. Found myself alone on the bed.
'Kate?'
There was no one else in the room.”

"As he lost himself in the memory of that day, a movement caught his eye.
In the picture, the street performer was staring at him.
“No.” He could barely force the word out.
...
His girlfriend’s head, always facing away from him, turned.
She stared at him."

"As the headlights shined in her eyes, she had no reaction. She didn't blink or turn her gaze. She just stood there. My wife hits the brakes, and we both stare at this woman. We don't say a word to one another as we focus on this strange woman..."

"It was just like in the movie scenes of young people viewing apartments in the city. The tiny space seemed large to us, those floors a marvel. The fireplace could not be used but would add atmosphere. The window looked out on horrors but brought in buckets of cheerful light.
This is someone else’s dream, I thought."

"You can’t just go strolling around Annedale, certainly not at night. It’s dangerous. For one thing, it attracts a constant rotation of the deeply unwell who are likely to attack on sight, if you’re lucky. They usually turn up in the halls come morning, although sometimes it’s just bits of them that I come across. Strips of skin floating on the brackish water that floods the basement stairwell, or bloodied fingernails embedded in the ceiling plaster. Weirdest one was a single tooth in a lightbulb, bloody gum still attached to the root, the glass all around it somehow intact..."
