In this talk from the simulation stream of DFTB17 Jesse talks about the challenges of debriefing outside of the simulation lab. It’s not as hard as you think it is.  He’s going to take you through two key articles from the debriefing literature and show you how you can translate them to real life practice.

Dr Jonny Taitz is a specialist General Paediatrician in private practice in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs but for this talk he is the Director of Paediatric Patient Safety for the Clinical Excellence Commission.  It is in this guise that he talks about the key work the CEC do to improve the quality and safety of healthcare provided to our young population. Susie Piper is the Director of Paediatrics and Child Health for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. Having previously run the Paediatric Ambulatory Care service at Campbelltown and Wyong hospitals.

Not all children that present to hospital via the emergency department need to be admitted to ongoing care. Susie talks about the role of an ambulatory care service and how it is slowly catching up with the adult Hospital in the Home (HITH) system.

Jane Cocks is a leading expert in neonatal and paediatric retrieval and has literally wrote the book (well, a chapter anyway). As former clinical director of SAAS Medstar kids she talks about the importance of key performance indicators and metrics in paediatric retrieval. We all like to that we are amazing at everything we do, but we do fail sometimes.

Who is Casey Parker? If you googled the name prior to the inaugural SMACC in Sydney you would have thought that ‘she’ was one of Panama’s leading adult stars. But now, when not playing a minor role in Grey’s Anatomy, he is a true generalist, working in Broome in Western Australia.

He’s part rural anaesthetist, part general practitioner, part educationalist and the other quarter of him is made up of an ultrasound machine. He writes at Broomedocs.com  and also presents a podcast that is not just for rural generalists and ultrasound tragics.

This talk though is something else altogether.
