When working with X-men kids, it is essential to acknowledge and support their nonverbal and/or meaningless sound communication. Pay attention to the child’s body language and gestures. Mirror their movements or gestures to show that you are engaged and understanding. Show empathy and compassion through your facial expressions. Smile, nod, or raise your eyebrows to acknowledge the child’s nonverbal cues.
Demonstrate active listening by facing the child, leaning slightly forward, and maintaining an open and attentive posture. This shows that you are fully present and engaged in their communication. The sound the kid makes does not have to make sense to you but remember it makes sense to them, so keep encouraging the kid to continue so that the kid feels confident to communicate.
Give verbal/nonverbal responses to acknowledge the child’s communication. For example, you can give a thumbs-up, a gentle touch on the shoulder, or a high-five to indicate understanding and support.
Most importantly, be patient and give the child ample time to process and respond. Respect their communication style, even if it is different from what is considered typical. Avoid rushing or interrupting their communication.
The important part is for them to continue expressing themselves.
