For the right man, all doors are open....
Mike Mackenzie is a self-made man with too much time on his hands and a bit of the devil in his soul. He is looking for something to liven up the days and perhaps give new meaning to his existence. A chance encounter at an art auction offers him the opportunity to do just that, as he settles on a plot to commit a "perfect crime". He intends to rip-off one of the most high-profile targets in Edinburgh - the National Gallery of Scotland.
So, together with two close friends from the art world, he devises a plan to lift some of the most valuable artwork around. But of course, the real trick is to rob the place for all it's worth whilst persuading the world that no crime was ever committed. But soon after he enters the dark waters of the criminal underworld he realises that it's very easy to drown.
Members Reviews:
Ian Rankin at his best
Characters richer and richer, details finer and finer, is Rankin the best crime writer in English? I think it's just possible.
Very enjoyable yarn
I am one of the many people who has read the entire collection of Rebus novels and like so many others, I hope that the Rebus story is not over. In the meantime, I believe that Mr. Rankin has many more books to write and I look forward to each of them. I found this book to be well written and fluid. The character development and plot are woven well together and Mr. Rankin still has his gift for words. I was surprised to see so many long time readers judge this book so harshly, it is unreasonable to expect the author to write the same book over and over, or expect him to start another novel series. Enjoy this book for what it is, Edinburgh and noir are still present for Rankin fans and the tension is maintained throughout the book. If Ian Rankin keeps writing, I will keep reading.
A great read, as expected!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! A little different from the Inspector Rebus series but every bit as good.
Good author
Learn something more of Scotland and their point of view. Been to Edinburgh and it is a side of Edinburgh that tourist do not see. Good writer. No explicit sex scenes for which I am glad but pretty human relationships which makes more sense to me. Have enjoyed all of his books.
excellent book cant wait for the movie
This book was a recomendation and i am so glad i purchased it. I read it straight through non stop. My favorite character in the book is Chib Calloway, Who is going to be played in the ITV movie version on aug 26th 2012 by my favorite actor Brian McCardie. I think this book is a must buy. Judge for yourself you wont be dissapointed.
