Hello, dear friends of architecture and design, I hope you are doing very well, enjoying the wonders of life. Today I am happy to have a new opportunity to share with you and tell you about my experience in a very particular place.
You can imagine how a constructive mistake became a tourist landmark, no doubt that with ingenuity and creativity great things can be achieved. This is the case of the Casa Encanta de Juan el Molinero, an obligatory stop if you are touring the Andean páramo.
The enchanted house of Juan el Molinero is located in the town of Escagüey in the State of Mérida, in the middle of an incredible environment, surrounded by nature and colonial architecture, like the Museo del Trigo, which I wrote about some time ago.
Hola, queridos amigos de arquitectura y diseño, espero que se encuentren muy bien, disfrutando de las maravillas de la vida. Hoy estoy feliz de tener una nueva oportunidad de compartir con ustedes y contarles mi experiencia en un lugar muy particular.
Puedes imaginar cómo un error constructivo llegó a convertirse en todo un hito turístico, sin duda, que con ingenio y creatividad se pueden conseguir grandes cosas. Este es el caso de la Casa Encanta de Juan el Molinero, una parada obligatoria si estás recorriendo el páramo andino.
La casa encantada de Juan el Molinero, está ubicada en el pueblo de Escagüey del Estado Mérida, en medio de un ambiente increíble, rodeado de naturaleza y arquitectura colonial, como el Museo del Trigo, del cual escribí hace un tiempo.
Upon arrival there is an atmosphere of friendliness and cordiality on the part of the owners and a teenager who is in charge of giving the tour. We can see that it is a single-family house, of traditional construction. The exterior design leads us to believe that it is a cozy house, with a tile roof and stone and brick cladding, common materials in the community that combine very well with the natural environment that surrounds it.
Al llegar se percibe un ambiente de amabilidad y cordialidad por parte de los dueños y de un adolescente que es el encargado de hacer el tour. Podemos observar que se trata de una vivienda unifamiliar, de construcción tradicional. El diseño exterior nos hace creer que se trata de una vivienda acogedora, con cubierta de teja y recubrimiento de piedra y ladrillos, materiales comunes en la comunidad que combinan muy bien con el entorno natural que lo rodea.
But the interior can surprise you, because this haunted house tries to defy gravity in many ways. Before entering, we are given the necessary recommendations to avoid falling. At the beginning you walk down a long corridor, where you are forbidden to turn on the phone or any light, because it is in the dark where you can fully live the experience.
Pero el interior, puede llegar a sorprenderte y es que esta casa encantada, trata de desafiar la gravedad en muchos sentidos. Antes de entrar, nos dan las recomendaciones necesarias, para evitar caerse. Al principio recorres un largo pasillo, donde te prohíben encender el teléfono o cualquier luz, porque es en la oscuridad donde podrán vivir a plenitud la experiencia.
Walking is a challenge, I felt insecure and was afraid of falling many times. You feel how the floor has a very steep slope. Also, on the walls it looks like some kind of vegetation is hanging and you feel as if something wants to catch you. Without a doubt, adrenaline takes hold of you and you can't stop thinking about where you went. This corridor seemed very long to me, but how can it be if the house is so small?
Caminar es un desafío, me sentí insegura y tuve miedo de caerme muchas veces. Sientes cómo el piso tiene una inclinación muy pronunciada. Además, en las paredes parece que colgará algún tipo de vegetación y sientes como si algo quisiera atraparte. Sin duda, la adrenalina se apodera de ti y no dejas de pensar en dónde te metiste. ¿A mí este pasillo me pareció muy largo, pero cómo puede serlo si la casa es tan pequeña?
At the end you see the light and get to the rooms. Even the house is very dark, that's why my photos are not the best, besides in the photos you can't see the steep slope of the floor, which is made of rustic cement.
Al final vez la luz y llegas a las habitaciones. Aun la casa es muy oscura, por eso mis fotos no son las mejores, además en las fotos no se nota la pronunciada pendiente del piso, el cual es de cemento rústico.
The interior walls are made of wood. The roof is made of cane, all in a dark color, which gives it a mysterious atmosphere. The young man tells us the story of the house, which was built by a man named Juan, who despite following his father's instructions to build his house when he was just a child, the house was a little tilted, he tried to create a game room, a kitchen, but any activity was completely impossible. Eventually, the house was bought by a foreigner, who turned it into a museum with all the belongings Juan left in it.
Las paredes internas son de madera. El techo de caña brava, todo en color oscuro, lo que le da un ambiente de misterio. El joven nos cuenta la historia de la casa, la cual fue construida por un hombre llamado Juan, quien a pesar de seguir las instrucciones de su padre para construir su casa cuando apenas era un niño, la casa le quedó un poco inclinada, él intentó crear una sala de juegos, una cocina, pero realizar cualquier actividad resultaba completamente imposible. Con el tiempo, la casa fue comprada por un extranjero, quien la convirtió en un museo con todas las pertenencias que Juan dejó en ella.
In the first room, there is the challenge of sitting down and getting up from simple chairs. My brother and sister-in-law were the volunteers, and they had a hard time getting up.
En la primera habitación, está el desafío de sentarse y levantarse de unas simples sillas. Mi hermano y mi cuñada fueron los voluntarios, y les costó muchísimo poder levantarse.
In the second room they have a pool table where it is impossible to play, logically the gravitational force comes into play and they will always go to the slanted side. But what really amazed me is when they put a ball in a slanted pipe and it, instead of moving down like a wait, went up the pipe. That surprised me.
En la segunda habitación tienen una mesa de billar o pool donde es imposible jugar, lógicamente la fuerza gravitacional entra en juego y ellas siempre irán al lado inclinado. Pero lo que me asombró realmente es cuando colocan una bola en una tubería inclinada y ella, en lugar de desplazarse hacia abajo como una espera, subía por la tubería. Eso me sorprendió.
Cooking was impossible, as was bathing. The truth is that strange things happen in that house and everything is due to the inclination of the floor, which tests many physical and gravitational concepts.
Cocinar, era imposible, al igual que bañarse. La verdad es que pasan cosas extrañas en esa casa y todo se debe a la inclinación del piso, que pone a prueba muchos conceptos físicos y gravitacionales.

Reflection
This makes us reflect on the consequences of errors in construction or in the architectural or structural design of any building, attention to detail is important, soil studies, since a settlement can leave a building with a state of inclination that makes it no longer functional. Every stage of construction is important, from design, planning to supervision while you are executing the work, so that it does not happen to us as it did to Juan, who could never enjoy his house.
If you ever visit Merida, I invite you to visit this particular house that will leave you with a funny and interesting anecdote to tell, it will also give you some things to think about.
Esto nos hace reflexionar en las consecuencias de los errores en la construcción o en el diseño arquitectónico o estructural de cualquier edificación, la atención al detalle es importante, los estudios de suelo, ya que un asentamiento puede dejar una edificación con un estado de inclinación que hace que ya no sea funcional. Cada etapa constructiva es importante, desde el diseño, la planeación hasta la supervisión mientras estás ejecutando la obra, para que no nos suceda como a Juan, quien nunca pudo disfrutar de su casa.
