January Sesshin 2019 Talk 3: "Repaying Our Debt of Compassion." Dogen taught, "Extending the buddhas' and ancestors' compassion freely and unlimitedly, we are able to attain buddhahood and let go of the attainment." In this talk, Tetsugan talks about our debt to the buddhas' and ancestors' for continuing this incredible practice so that we today have access to it. How can we repay our debt?

January Sesshin 2019 Talk 2: "Lotus in Fire." In this talk, Dosho continues to examine Dogen's teaching on zazen with Extensive Record, 348, where Dogen said, "Eyes and nose should be upright and straight, headtop reaching up to the blue sky, and ears aligned above the shoulders.... Do not control the monkey mind or horse will. Make an effort like a lotus in fire."

January Sesshin 2019 Talk 1: "Tuning the Breath and Settling the Mind: Three Perspectives." What did Dogen say about breath practice? In this talk, Dosho comments on his Extensive Record, 390, and examines the individual vehicle, great vehicle, and Zen perspectives.

"Alone Inside Out," December 9, 2018, by Dosho. In this talk, Dosho begins with recent research that found that many Americans would rather be electrocuted than spend time in peaceful contemplation, alone with their own minds. This talk explores "aloneness" with Record of Empty Hall, Case 94: Yàoshān’s Mudball. About this case, Xūtáng said, “It’s hard to live alone in the ancient house."

"The Process of Awakening" is Dosho's talk from the first night of the November sesshin, 2018. In the talk, Dosho comments on Torei Zenji's discussion of how awakening (kensho) begins with samadhi and opens up when we wholeheartedly don't straddle the gate.

"The Importance of Meeting With a Teacher" is Dosho's talk from the second night of the November sesshin, 2018. In the talk, Dosho comments on the process of meeting with a teacher (dokusan), commenting on comments made by Yamada Koun Roshi.

"We Are One Family," from Sunday, November 4, 2018. In the talk, Dosho talks about the importance of applying our practice in the world. Themes include stories that encourages us to stay asleep and those that encourage awakening, walls that divide and walls the connect, and gates that we should open and those that we should remain closed.

"Centered, Harmonious Functioning," is Dosho's the Sunday Morning Practice talk from October 21, 2018. In the talk, Dosho asks, "In this swirling world, how to find relief? and how much relief is it okay for me to find?" The Record of Empty Hall, Case 68, is used to explore this question, especially the passage, "Many people simply receive this great opportunity, [yet] cannot put it to great use. Only if like a mountain, centered and harmonious, will we be together with it." The wisdom of differentiation is explored, especially in light of current issues of inclusion are considered.

"The Truth of the Self Through the Generations of Our Lineage:" Dōshō's second talk for the September Sesshin 2018. In the talk, Dōshō offers the comments on the following sutra passage by a half-dozen Sōtō and Rinzai teachers: "When a single person returns to the source by awakening to the truth of the self, the great void in all ten directions disappears without a trace."

"Clouds Gentle, Water Boundless: The Life and Death of National Teacher Daiō" is Dōshō's first talk for the September Sesshin 2018. In the talk, he focuses on the importance of lineage. Daiō, an essential link in our lineage, was a contemporary of Dōgen, but much less well known. Here's a verse he wrote after returning from China: "Clouds gentle, water boundless/The universal gate appears, do not slight it/The pilgrim Sudhana did not yet know he had it/Walked in vain to a hundred cities through fog and cold."
