To be reduced by exhaustion to only caring for food, shelter and water, can be a learning experience. Mindfulness and metaphorical thinking acts very differently when we have only simple repetitive actions to contend with. We can also be aware of the affect advertising and city life is having on us by contrasting it with a few days in nature. These ideas and more are discussed in detail throughout this episode.

Dave Goodman holds a Ph.D. in Jazz studies from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and is the recipient of numerous music awards. He has performed in national and international ensembles and toured with prominent jazz musicians on a regular basis for over two decades, appearing on over 40 albums. He is an active educator, and is widely recognised for his wealth of wisdom and knowledge of jazz drumming, and music studies.

In this episode Dave shares his experiences with Bob Berg, and what it was like to discover the world of jazz-fusion music. We also talk about the nature of learning, what it means to be a dedicated student, and how one can move through the learning process in an optimal way. Dave refers to the essay ‘The Road To Graceland’ by Robert Fripp as a way of explaining his philosophy of music and philosophy of life. We also discuss transcribing music, Schoenberg harmony, drummer Gordy Knudtson, and Dave’s album Trioflight – as well as many other things!

In this episode we talk at length about the music of Keith Jarrett and his philosophies behind the creative process. We discuss a few aspects of The Fourth Way, a philosophy developed by George Gurdjieff, which had a large influence on Jarrett. We also quote extensively from the book The Psychology of Mans Possible Evolution by Peter Ouspensky (a student of Gurdjieffs) to help understand what thought processes Jarrett uses to make his music. Keith Jarrett is one of the greatest musicians of the recorded era and this episode pays homage to his legacy.
