  • Episode 213: The New MacBook Pro, Talking to Tech Gets More Accessible & Table Troubles with Edge
Welcome to this week’s episode of Double Tap Canada. If you’re looking for all the latest tech news and opinion, you’ve come to the right place. It’s a tech show… honestly.
Regular listeners may remember that last week, Steven was off to the Apple store with an armful of gadgets to trade-in. He was adamant that he wasn’t going to buy anything else, especially the new MacBook Pro. In an unsurprising twist, this week Steven gives his impressions on his brand new, M1 Pro powered MacBook Pro. But which model did he buy? That’s a good question!
Sticking with computers, the discussion moves onto Microsoft’s Edge browser. Steven explains why he prefers it to Safari on the Mac and his switch from Google to DuckDuckGo as a search engine. But can anyone help with inaccessible tables in Edge?
In other news, Adele gets the shuffle button removed from album pages on Spotify. Is she right, or should listeners decide how they listen to her music? Shaun and Steven argue on the importance of graphics cards when it comes to the Jaws screen reader and there’s some very exciting news for anyone with speech difficulties as Google unveils their new Relate app.
Finally, for anyone who loves both tech and dogs, there’s a new product that allows your furry friend to video call you whenever they like. Sounds like a tall tail but maybe this company could take the lead in the market!

  • Episode 212: Hands On with the Surface Pro 8, Apple’s Arty Videos Get Descriptive and Trading In Steven
Welcome to Double Tap Canada. We kick off this week’s show with the news that Steven is off to the Apple store with his huge collection of tech to trade it all in. The question is what will he come back with? Spoiler alert … we all know it’ll be a brand new Mac Book Pro.
Next up, Marc tells us his thoughts on the new Surface Pro 8 from Microsoft. Just what is it about the portable powerhouse that means it’s the only computer he needs?
In this week’s tech news, there are some interesting new updates to the Apple Store app that could make shopping easier and more accessible, so why is Shaun not impressed? Speaking of accessibility, Airbnb have announced they are introducing an accessibility filter, meaning you can search for properties that can meet your requirements. This leads to an interesting story from Steven about Spanish stairs… Finally, what exactly are communities and why are they the future of WhatsApp?
The show wraps up with your emails, including some concerns about the new Windows SE laptop and assistive software such as Jaws.

  • Episode 211: A Cool New Feature in Jaws 2022, Hands On with Apple Watch 7 and Talking Tech with Rene Ritchie
Are you looking for a show where you can hear all about what’s new in the world of tech and get plumbing advice at the same time? Good news! It’s time for another episode of Double Tap Canada.
After a brief detour into Steven’s plunger prowess and exactly why he can’t decide between Windows and Mac, we discuss a new feature in Jaws 2022 that he simply loves. The new Split Audio feature allows you to route the screen reader voice to either the left or right audio channel and have the system audio in the opposite channel. Anyone who has struggled with two sets of headphones and multiple audio interfaces knows how useful this feature could be, and it’s surprisingly easy to enable.
Next, it’s onto the tech news, and this week we speak to Rene Ritchie to get his thoughts on the new 12th generation processor from Intel. Is it really a challenge to the AMD Ryzen or Apple's M1 CPUs? Speaking of challengers, can Microsoft’s recently announced Windows Surface SE laptop make ground on the Google Chromebook when it comes to education?
Finally, Steven has been trying out the Apple Watch Series 7. With it’s marginally bigger screen and improved speaker, will it be staying on his wrist or be banished to the drawer of unused tech?
The show wraps up with Courtney Craven from CanIPlayThat.com, who talks about some of the exciting accessibility features in the new Forza Horizon 5 game for Xbox. And we’ll be answering an email from listener Rebecca regarding Windows 365 and Remote Desktop Client.

  • Episode 210: Welcome to the Metaverse, a Look at SharePlay and Who Ordered an iPhone?
Shaun still can’t figure out how his microphone works, Marc may just disappear before the end of the show and Steven has bought a new gadget. That’s right, it’s time for another episode of Double Tap Canada.
We kick off this week's show with a confession. Steven was recently surprised when a brand-new iPhone 13 Mini turned up at his door. However, a quick check of his order history soon solved the mystery: he ordered it after a night of drinking and reminiscing about his old iPhone 12 Mini. It seems that when it comes to a smartphone, size really does matter.
Next, it’s on to the Metaverse, a totally new way to use and experience the Internet through virtual reality. Despite what you may have heard, the Metaverse isn’t just a Facebook thing; many of the big tech companies are talking about what part they are going to play in this new phase of computing. Sounds exciting, but is this brave new virtual world going to be open to us as disabled people?
In Apple news, the recent iOS 15.1 update brings with it the new SharePlay feature. This allows you to watch TV shows or movies, listen to music and even use apps with other people when in a Facetime call. Steven wants to showcase the feature with a live demo… what could possibly go wrong?
There’s also Steven’s final thought on the new Air Pods 3, and an interesting email from a listener starts a conversation about what would be our dream portable device?

  • Episode 209: Looking at Air Pods 3, Liking A More Accessible Zoom and Licking Credit Cards
Double Tap Canada is back for another week of top tech talk and news. But first, our listeners have plenty to say on the topic of Double Tap merchandise. Is a hairy logo the secret to success? I really hope not…
Next, we take a brief look at the recent Samsung event and can’t help feeling nostalgic at the thought of being able to customize the look of our smartphones. Samsung announced the ability to do just that with their new bespoke Z Flip phone. With a range of faceplates and colours, your dream of owning a bright pink leopard skin handset could soon be a reality.
In other news, Marc is tempted by the new DJI Action 2 Dual Screen camera; with its modular design and small size, could this newcomer take on the might of the GoPro cameras? And is there even an accessible option for us when it comes to action cameras?
After a small plea from Shaun regarding finding the perfect mug so he can stop scalding his fingers, it is on to what Steven bought this week. The new Apple Air Pods 3 have a new design and features such as MagSafe charging, but what do they sound like? Well, if Steven can install iOS 15.1 in time, he’ll let us know.
In OS news, we look at the features that are only available to computers running the M1 processor in the new Monterey Mac OS. Shaun questions why on-device dictation is not available on Intel-based systems, but the arguably more demanding Live Text feature is? He’s also updated to Windows 11, but has he noticed any difference from Windows 10?
The show wraps up with the news of Mastercard introducing a more accessible credit card for the blind, which leads to an interesting claim from Shaun and great news from Zoom that real-time captioning is now available to users with free accounts. Also, Steven has his next purchase in mind, with the imminent release of the Anker Sound Core Frames. They’re modular glasses that offer built-in Bluetooth audio. But do they have what it takes to replace his current favorites, the Bose Frames?

  • Episode 208: Even More Events. Unapologetic Apple and Unenthusiastic Google
As we see, not just one but two new tech events this week, as Double Tap Canada returns to see what top tech gadgets Steven will be rushing out to buy next.
Apple unveiled the next step in their M1 processor range with new MacBook Pros powered by the M1 Pro or M1 Pro Max CPUs. While there’s no denying the incredible performance these chips offer, Shaun can’t help feeling that when it comes to Apple re-introducing features such as the HDMI port, SD card reader, MagSafe charging and throwing away the Touch Bar, Apple were trying to correct some of the bad design decisions they have made in the past without actually admitting it.
When it comes to the Google event, it was all about the Pixel 6 smartphone. With its new design, including a camera bar and in-screen fingerprint sensor and it’s new Google in-house processor, it had some impressive features. The only problem was that it had all been leaked weeks before the event. Not only that, the leaks were from Google themselves. But was there anything here to tempt Steven away from the iPhone?
All this plus your feedback, and why Shaun has fallen out with Amazon, only on Double Tap Canada.

  • Episode 207: What Are Apple Unleashing Next and YouTube Enhances Accessibility
What better way to kick off this week’s episode of Double Tap Canada than with a rant from a frazzled Marc Aflalo? A houseful of kids and broken wifi: it’s a perfect storm.
News of another Apple event should cheer him up, but what do we think Apple are going to unleash?
Next, Shaun tells us how he’s recently taken his first steps into the scary world of cryptocurrency. But what app did he use, and how easy and accessible was the process? Sadly, Steven seems to have forgotten the gadget he bought this week, but he is eager to buy a new laptop. The only thing holding him back is the perfect keyboard.
There’s also announcements from YouTube regarding new accessibility they are introducing to their service, including Live Captioning for Live Streams, multiple audio stream support and auto subtitle translation. Obviously the addition of multi stream audio means that content creators could add a descriptive track for their videos, but Shaun wonders how many will actually do that?
We wrap up the show with some public service announcements regarding why updating is bad, some great learning resources for Windows 11 from Microsoft and your emails.

  • Episode 206: Amazing Amazon, Magnificent MagSafe and Insert Key Insanity
This week’s Double Tap Canada sees the welcome return of Steven Scott as he joins Marc Aflalo and Shaun Preece to talk all things tech.
After a brief discussion regarding the best option for a portable Windows machine, it is on to the Amazon event. With the Astro Home Robot, the flying Always Home Cam, the Echo Glow - which can turn any surface into an interactive touchscreen - and the wall-mountable 15-inch Echo Show, are Amazon the new trailblazers of innovation, or have they turned into the Willy Wonka of tech? Either way, Shaun wants a home robot to bring him his cup of tea…
Next, it is on to Steven's latest purchase, the Apple Magsafe Charger. He loves how he can easily check the battery life of the charger in iOS, but Shaun is concerned that when it comes to keeping your iPhone topped up it falls short. Also, Steven and Marc confess their mutual love for the new iPad Mini 6 and Marc tells us just why he needs the new J7 Roomba smart vacuum.
The show wraps up with listener feedback, which leads to the DTC team inventing a whole new tech product. Forget the laptop, say hello to the belly top…

  • Episode 205: iOS 15 New Features and the Microsoft Adaptive Kit
Double Tap Canada is back with another hour of top tech. This week, the DTC team have been taking a look at iOS 15. Shaun will be talking about and demonstrating some of the new features he’s excited about, and Marc will be looking forward to what’s coming up in iOS 15.1.
Next, we’ll look at an assistive product that was showcased at the recent Microsoft event. The Adaptive Kit may not be a shiny new electronic gadget, but it is still an exciting product. It is a kit full of items such as tactile and high contrast stickers and key caps that are designed to fit easily to several Microsoft Surface products that will make using these devices easier for people with disabilities. It’s not only great to see Microsoft continue in its development of assistive products, but it’s also great to see accessibility and disability being discussed and shown as part of the keynote event itself.

  • Episode 204: The Microsoft Surface Event 2021
As Captain Steven Scott is off wreaking havoc to buffets across the Seven Seas, it’s down to Marc Aflalo and Shaun Preece to take the helm of the good ship Double Tap Canada this week.
After the rather forgettable Apple event last week, it seems that the DTC team are more than a little impressed with the products Microsoft has unveiled at their Surface event. Top of the wish list is the new Surface Laptop Studio. With a fantastic looking design and powerful tech specifications, could this be the must have laptop of the year? Also, there is an update to the popular Surface Pro range with the Surface Pro 8. Again, Microsoft has delivered on the sleek design and powerful hardware. Is this the laptop replacement the iPad wants to be? Speaking of which, can the new Surface Go stand up against the new iPad Mini 6?
There’s also the much-anticipated, Android powered, dual screen phone, the Surface Duo 2. With an updated processor and the addition of 3 rear cameras, Marc can’t wait to get his hands on one. And staying with ARM powered devices, Microsoft also unveiled the new Surface Pro X. Running Windows 11 for ARM and with the ability to run legacy x86 and x64 software in emulation, will we finally see a Windows ARM device that average consumers will want?
If you have an opinion you’d like to share on the show, you can do so by emailing [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you.
