March 17, 2023 Ready to Go Full Time In Her Doula Business with Nikkea Anderson
Nikkea Anderson and I first connected when she was already trained as a doula but figuring out what she wanted to do and how to get started in this work. She was working full-time in daycare services and had been for many years. Fast forward to today and this is her final work in a daycare because she’s doing full time doula work in an agency and taking on private clients.
She was struggling with imagining how work as a full-time doula could look. She
knew she loved this field, but branching into a new career felt very daunting. She questioned her ability to find clients and sustain her life without significant financial issues. It seemed that keeping her current job was the safest option, but her desire was to be a doula and support new families in that precious season of life.

Nikkea was looking for someone experienced in the doula industry who was approachable and funny. She needed some guidance but also wanted to see what a successful doula looked like in real life. She joined my 6 week program because she knew it would get her where she wanted to be in her doula career.

Nikkea is the doula behind Birth To Five Doula Services. She started as a preschool teacher in 2008. She began teaching preschool for the DOD in 2015. She left what I knew behind and became a Doula in 2022
After giving all she had in the classroom she jumped all in at the chance to take her impact beyond the classroom and right into family’s homes as a postpartum doula, sleep consultant, and lactation consultant

March 10, 2023Do Doulas Need Business Strategy?
Strategy and planning is at the center of what we do as doulas. If we support birth we tell our clients they should go into the process of labor with a plan, or at least a bit of knowledge and some preferences! Your Doula Business is similar to this! You need to have some kind of game plan, and also a little bit of flexibility for how this might go.
You need to have an idea of not only where you hope to go as a doula, but also what that could look like and how you may get there. Now I specifically want to encourage you to both DREAM BIG and also plan strategically. Those two need to go hand in hand. They need to be held together, just like in birth preparation.

March 04, 2023How Do I Take Time Off as a Doula?
Taking time off-call is very important to doula work. Being on-call has all kinds of wear and tear that comes along with it. Because of that doulas have to be more intentional than many professionals at prioritizing time off and healthy amounts of breaks. This is of course part of what we talked about in the doula burnout series as it is a major contributor to burnout! This episode dives into how to set those times off and what that can look like as your doula business is starting to fill up.
I think it’s important to figure out days that you need off due to family, religious holidays, birthdays, etc. And also figure out times to be away or at least unplugged from the business. This is easier for many of us if we are physically gone, but that’s not a necessary part of it if you are good at holding this boundary strong!

February 24, 2023What Extra Services Do Doulas Offer In Their Business Outside of Doula Care?
Sometimes as a doula you feel pressure to add all kinds of services to your business. The problem is that there are two problems with that: 1. There are costs involved with adding services and certifications and 2. You can end up adding services that you do not actually want to do!
My big example of this is placenta encapsulation. I was told for many years that I should add that service to my business. But the problem is that cutting a placenta kinda freaks me out. Not in a grossed out way, but in a woozy I-may-pass-out kind of way! So that is not in the cards for me, but would you believe that I seriously considered it for many years? Like many years I considered doing something that made me feel like I might pass out?!? So learn from that and seriously evaluate your decisions.

February 22, 2023Doula Burnout: What Role Does Trauma Play In Doula Burnout?
We are at the forth and final cause of Doula Burnout that we are diving into throughout this mini series. Today’s cause is trauma. Both primary and secondary. Now, the last three were a touch easier to control and buffer, but this one is the one that you have very little control over whether it happens, but you have lots of control over how you respond to it.
Trauma is hard because it looks/sounds/feels different for everyone. But having good tools to not only process, but protect yourself is vital. Sometimes that looks like healthy boundaries to not work with certain providers or boundaries about what types of clients you take on. Especially if you have your own birth or postpartum trauma, then you can do work to avoid those same triggers or experiences.
A big part of this one is giving yourself resources and space.
