Down to Earth But Heavenly Minded

The doctrine of the return of Christ demands careful and discriminating consideration. A distinction is to be made between two future events; first, Christ and His coming For His saints, and second; Christ and His coining With His saints.

In coming for his saints, He descends into the air and receives to Himself those who are caught up from the earth; some from the dead and others translated from a living state. This truth will be seen in such passages as 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor. 15:22, 23, 51, 52.

What a strange question! but it refers to the Son of God, our Lord

Jesus Christ, and is a prophecy concerning His birth and death. The prophet Zechariah foretold His coming with this name and title, chapter 10 and verse 4 of his prophecy:

"Out of him (the tribe of Judah) shall come forth . . . The Nail!"

Numerous titles are given to the Son of God in the Bible, but this may be one of the strangest yet filled with great significance.

In Old Testament times, a nail was used as a tent pin, driven into the ground (Exodus 27:19) and also as a strong pin, built into the wall of an eastern building securely, to hang vessels upon (Ezekiel 15:3). This latter explanation suggests why Christ is called "The Nail."

There can be no other foundation beyond that which is already laid; I mean Jesus Christ Himself. If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, and fine stone, or with wood, hay, and straw, the work that each man does will, at last, be brought to light; the day of judgment will expose it (1 Corinthians 3:11-13, New English Bible).

At the Judgment Seat of Christ, “gold, silver, precious stones” alone will stand the test of fire and be rewarded. The “wood, hay, and stubble” will be destroyed. We can rightly ask ourselves the question, “What is my reward then?” (1 Corinthians 9:18). What is the meaning and eternal implication of “gold, silver, precious stones”?

Light for the path can only be given to us by God (1 John 1:5). In every age, God has given light to His people, specific counsel suitable for each period. When they walked in His light, they overcame their difficulties; but when they refused, failure resulted, and they were in darkness. In the confusion today, rather than being indifferent, we should understand the light that God has given to preserve us. His method has been to give ONE LEADING TRUTH for each period, sufficient light to guide and to preserve His people. Consider some examples from the Scriptures:

“Yet I will be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come” (Ezek. 11:16) was a very special promise for very special times, given to the faithful of God’s people in Israel during their captivity long ago. One of the great joys of David’s life was the momentous occasion when the Ark of God was brought back to its resting place in Jerusalem. It inspired a song of thanksgiving from the heart of the sweet singer of Israel as the whole city reverberated with holy joy. Toward the end of the song, David described four features that may be applied to all young believers of our day. He says, “Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to Thy holy name arid glory in Thy praise.” (1 Chronicles 16:35).
