Another really good book by Dusty Richards. I love his attention to detail & his characters are likeable & yet ordinary. No super heros here. If you love a good western, you must read this one. As for the seller. Very pleased with the speedy service AND the condition of this used book. Will use this seller again.

Book Review, THE HORSE CREEK INCIDENT
This book, by Dusty Richards, rides across the page at its own pace. There are no contrivances or flights of fancy in this western novel. Rather, this book is sturdy and rock solid, gaining momentum with each passing page. Guided by a western writer who knows his subject matter well, the story unfolds with the steady progression of its main character, who after having a good friend gunned down, wants the crime solved and the murderers brought to justice.
Herschel Baker lives on Horse Creek with neighbors who are eking out a living on small cattle ranches. Herschel attends the funeral of his best friend, Jack Diehl, another small rancher, and vows that nothing will stop him from seeking justice and solving his friend's murder. Going to the sheriff he asks that the killing be investigated. The sheriff, representing the interest of the big ranchers, threatens Herschel to mind his own business with, "You and that bunch of rustlers down there on Horse Creek can go to h... for all I care."
Herschel already knew what the response would be; the law was on the side of the large ranchers. But his sense of right and wrong demanded that he take the conventional approach. After the lawman threatened him, Herschel Baker decides to run for sheriff. Against countless odds, even though his life will most certainly be in danger, he plans his campaign against the larger ranchers who control the law in Yellowstone County.
Herschel Baker is well-liked and respected by the local citizens who are struggling to survive. A good woman and handsome widow, Marsha Allen, and her three children are Herschel's main source of solace. It is to her small ranch and home he goes for care when he is nearly killed.
Dusty Richards inexorably moves the story along. Step-by-step, it is revealed to the reader which person represents the big cattle ranchers and how that individual runs Yellowstone County. We see him use the sheriff, Sam Talbot; a wanted criminal, Buck Palmer; sheriff deputies; hired gunmen; and killers to wield hidden power against the common citizens. As the struggling populace becomes angered at the crooked dealings of the rich, they organize and support Herschel for sheriff.
Intertwined in this intricate tale is the weather. Constant cold, freezing temperatures, blizzards, and snowstorms become crucial elements in this novel. Both the rich and poor must deal with the effects the cold temperatures have on their animals.
