Dean gives you only enough to keep you in suspense while you try to figure out this mystery.
This novella was a really fun read. I picked it up during an Amazon promotion for free, and loved it. Think a mix of the fairy tales you grew up with and dark fairy tales that you may have read if you got your hands on really old ones. Almost immediately I was drawn into this world that Jolie, Jamie and Greta live in. You get a sense that there maybe some magic or supernatural stuff going on but Bridgid Dean gives you only enough to keep you in suspense while you try to figure out this mystery.
The ending of this book is going to be a hit or miss for a lot of readers. It really depends on what kind of reader you are. All I can say is go into it with an understanding that not everything is a fairytale and there are alternative endings. I will leave it at that because I don't want to include any spoilers and it's really hard not to do so.
In the short 68 pages of this novella I fell in love with the characters. It is really hard to give characters substances in this limited space but the author is a weaver of magic herself. Each of them have gone through their own personal torment and it's up to you to judge each of them for their actions. I did have a love/hate relationship with Jamie, though. At times he was so sneaky I just couldn't understand why Jolie was so into him. I mean who brings a seemingly homeless, tarot card reading man home with her? Was he using supernatural forces to seduce her? Was he magical? I guess you just have to check it out for yourself. I personally think it is worth the read.

Being an avid biography reader, paying careful attention to character development is my M.O. Dean manages to mold and shape her characters' true forms within this novella. In just the first few pages, I felt as if I was immersed in the sauce of sass that is the heroine's brew. Come to find it is in essence the witches potion for a mystery of magic. What a tale!
Dean writes with clear intention, artfully concise but descriptive paragraphs that help the reader easily imagine this world and connect with characters. It's an adventure that you can read waiting for the bus or in between activities or just before bed for the nostalgic feel. Regardless, it is captivating.
My only significant criticism is that in the development of plot, the ending felt a bit rushed. This is an exciting tale and deserves more patience.
Expect more to come from Dean, and very much looking forward to a continuation of what lies in the heart of the forest.
Attention Grabbing Book!
Couldn't put this one down! If you're looking for suspense and mystery...then you need this. Love the heroine in this story! Even passed this off to my older teen daughter to read when I finished.
